Don't shoot me down because I've started a which oil to use thread, but which 10 w 40 has fewest anti wear additives such as zddp. I want to be as easy on the auto gearbox as possible and i believe that these additives are no good for the post 1984 mini's.

I'mhoping someone like mra minis is there to offer some advice.

Use a good 20W 50 oil for a Mini - yes - even the auto.......

No NOT the Auto.....

The later AP2b will not function as efficienctly as it should if you use 20w/50 even a high mileage unit as the valves and oil ways are designed for the lighter 10w/40 oil.

Is is correct that 20 50 is bad for the clutch plates and bands too? Any advice on the best brand or type to use?

Yes it can be, as it takes longer for the oil to be removed by the clutch pistons, this allows slip to occur and increased friction wear of the frictional surfaces.

If it where human, we would probably say it is lethargic.

If the oil entering the actuators (pistons that operate the bands) enters too slow, it can "bypass" the seals before they are forced against the pistons bore, this then also allows drum slippage and increased wear and tear.

Thanks Martin. I want to look after the box as there's so few people that can fix them. What oil do you use after a rebuild?

If you are in the UK I try to get a brand 10w40 or 15w40 or similar, if abroad it depends on the country ...

Try to ensure that it is a "straight" oil, not synthetic. Castrol GTX 10W-40 A3/B4 is ok in all Minis, manual or automatic.
