Carb flooding? HIF44

When I bolted it back on and tried to start the car, it floods VERY quickly, even when turning over at zero throttle - the plugs are soaking wet after 2-3 seconds!
I took the dashpot off to have a look - even 20-30 minutes after trying to start the car there was fuel pouring out of the jet and into the manifold - is this normal?
Went back out this morning and it looks like the float chamber is touching the body (it didn't before!) and it was dripping fuel out onto the road. Looks like it's coming from the the float cover.
a.) What have I done, and b.) How do I fix it?
First things first I need to sort my phantom clearance problem, but after that??

By the way for clarification if your carb has a seperate side mounted float chamber then its got to be a HS4 and not a HIF as these have integrated float chambers !!!

The next question is... where the hell did my needle valve get to???
If I can't find it, can I use a 175 needle valve from a kit for a Weber 45. Or am I just being silly now???
PS My carb is definately a HIFF44, the cover I'm talking about is described by Haynes manual for metro as "55.) Float chamber cover." It the cover right at the bottom of the carb.
Make sure the needle valve has not dropped out of the cover or the pump will just be pouring fuel into the chamber and hence carb !!

Check the Float clearance, bend the metal strip to alter it.

To be fair I think the car was chronically lean before, as it tended to pink like crazy on hard throttle...
I might just chuck the Weber back on but it's very "on/ off" in it's power delivery and impossible to drive moderately. It's not been set up yet, so I'm sure it can be improved...

Going to take the cop-out option and bolt up a spare HIF44 I have for now I think. Sort the other one out later.
Apologies yes it is a HIF44. Didn't realise you had removed the carb to take the cover from the bottom !!!
