Whats the best way to clean up aluminum engine castings? I want to clean up the outside of the transmission and all the aluminum on the outside of the engine. Hopefully get it close to looking like new. It is all disassembled so that might make things easier. Whats the best and easiest way to do this?

Try Bead blasting, then seal with a clear lacquer to prevent oxidation.

Best way to clean ali casings....
1. Put ali casing in chemical dip tank....
2. Put kettle on and have tea
3. Remove from dip tank.
4. Pressure wash all DGS, Paint, Gaskets etc off casing
5. Put in Hot Parts washer ( aka Dishswasher )
6. Put kettle on again !
7. Empty dish washer, while parts are still hot and slightly wet, remove any remaining gasket silicon etc etc
8. If you're not satisfied with how clean items are.... Plug all threads & holes with bungs or grub screws.
9. Blast with medium grade grit to remove any oxidation, remaining gaskets
10. Blast with fine glass medium to rejuvenate ali, and shine.

I have a dishwasher in the garage for this purpose - works a treat.
Have to make sure it is a base casing though, the gears don't like it much...
