Loving this build, how does this fit in with the law?
is it classed as a Mini or MX5 ?

Kit car I would've thought. Probably will need a Q plate.

The MX5 is a separate chassis not a monocoque though, so you could blag that you've just changed cosmetic stuff and the structure and internals are still all MX5 and so keep the mazda's identity, like the MR2 "ferrari's" that keep the toyota plates. Might be pushing your luck though...

You can spot a tyre kicker a mile off when they are talking about wheel size and colourWhat size wheels are you planning on useing on it? Its all looking very good but I just think the wheels are too big. I know you wont be able to run 10s but maybe some 13's? Also what colour you thinking of doing it? A really retro 70's colour would look cool!

I am pretty sure mx5s are a monocoque, most things are nowadays as its a bit old fashioned to have a body and a chassis. but nether the less this will be an awesome project no matter what the numberplate says :)

Put into Google 'MX5 Power plant frame'

Couldn't agree more! It may not be structural as is, but wouldn't take a lot all to beef up the middle section a bit. I am thinking aluminium bodywork and hey presto, one super cheap super quick track day car!

It is a very interesting car and a great car to base a kit on.
I am not sure I would call it a separate chassis but the 2 subframes are connected.
The chassis on my Elan +2 is referred to by the factory as a 'subframe'.
