Am curious as to how much bhp a classic mini would need to beat a BMW 175bhp mini?

My current engine is being tuned up to about 90bhp, hopefully 100bhp. Would this be enough or would the car need more?

More curiousity than anything else.

Thanks

Well there is a lot too think about.

The Weight of a BINI Cooper S vs Its Power So its BHP/Per Tonne
and the same for your classic one.

You depending on the length of the race 1/4 mile, you may beat one but, they have more gears and more power they'll pull you back in in anything longer than a quater mile.

i raced a 1380 mini in my bini cooper s, i dont know the bhp of my friends mini, but i was doing just under 60 in 2nd gear and by that point his was putting his mini into 4th.

like whats said above, its impossible to say really, as gear boxes can make a difference (obviously because you lose power when changing gear) and who is prepared to push there mini the furthest in what gear. also weight,

if were talking perfect conditions, flat road, dry etc over 1/4 mile with 100bhp in a classic mini, you would stand a chance

theres only one way to solve this...........FIGHTTTTT!!!!!!!

BHP per tonne -

BMW Mini Cooper S - 1210kg seems to be the weight.

1210 / 1000 = 1.21 tonnes

180bhp / 1.21 tonnes - 148.76BHP/Tonne

Classic mini - 650kg I believe at max althou it says 645kg

650 / 1000 = 0.65

100bhp / 0.65 tonnes - 153.84BHP/Tonne

So according to my figures, a classic mini at 100bhp should be faster atleast at the start than the new BMW mini. Maybe top end, probably not as more gears and larger engine but off the line and hopefully up to 80/90 mph, id guess the classic mini be faster

you could beat it on acceleration with some more modification but know where near the top speed . i would imagine.

You need to define in what way you mean 'beat it'.
Acceleration in a straight line? Up to what speed? Max speed? Road-holding? Speed around a certain track? Time to complete a distance along a twisty and bumpy road?

I would say up to 60MPH also depends on tyres.

Lots of factors, how much weight is only one thing, the gear ratios.

And traction 'off the line', which I've always found to be the big issue with a Mini. Maybe with an LSD and slick tyres it is better, but that makes it difficult to drive and illegal on the roads.
The torque curve is the most important thing for acceleration and a 100 bhp Mini has a very narrow torque band compared to a BINI.

easy.

step 1 - buy a classic mini

step 2 - take it to z-cars with a bag full of money.

step 3 - enjoy winning races against ANYONE.

simple.

BMW Mini will be the better car all round, unless its something mad like Z-cars suggested. The classic has little weight but little traction, and nowhere near the same amount of torque, so the BMW will be faster off the line for a second, then the classic will reign for a bit till the BMW stretches its legs and the torque wins it over.

Reading back thats pretty much what cooperman just said, but sod it, its christmas.

A 100hp Mini wouldn't stand a chance against an S, power to weight doesn't mean a great deal once on the move and air resistance becomes a factor.

my previous mini had 85bhp at the wheels and it was still pretty slow compared to modern cars after about 40mph.

If they were both falling from a great height though, thanks to the laws of gravity you'd have a draw! :proud:
