Could someone explain how you tell the differences between a metro a series and a mini engine other than a engine plate which has been lost .

none of the metro engines are A series, they are all A+, the difference in outward appearance between an MG metro 1275 and a normal metro 1275 are :- a built in oil cooler on the oil filter housing, alloy rocker cover and an alloy inlet manifold and seperate cast exhaust manifold.

Only the cam is different from other 1275 carb A+ engines.

and the head.....and the inlet/exhaust manifolds.......and a bigger carb.....and a higher compression ratio!...............so there are a few differences........NOT just the cam!

So the cylinder head is different but what is different in the block? I believe the only difference between a MG block and a carb 1275 of the same year is the cam. My RSP block is the same as an MG block and as a stripped block on the workshop floor I can see nothing special about it? How would anyone tell the block from another 1275?

the block is the same but the piston skirt is higher on the MG metro/ carb cooper to raise the compression ratio to 10:4:1

In summary, looking from the outside there is no way of telling one A+ engine from another without an engine number... ( apart from if it's small bore or big bore ), so always assume what the seller is trying to convince you of is a load of bull

Removing the head will give you a better indication as you can then measure the valves ( and in the case of a turbo, the diameter of the exhaust valve stem )

With any luck the pistons will also have markings on the top, so you can discover the bore, piston type and without too much hassle measure the stroke and bore if necessary.
