I'll be starting to get my RSP S in order in the new year and I know that from the factory it would have been fitted with a Janspeed exhaust.

I'm trying to keep the car as original as possible but just wondered if the Janspeed exhausts are any good? Most people seem to recommend an RC40 (which I've got) or a Maniflow on here so how do the Janspeed offerings compare?

Cheers,

Matt.

When I got my RSP S, Tommy, last year, he was original, but sadly needed a new exhaust, so the Janspeed came off and was replaced by a Maniflow, which seems fine. However, I too like my Minis standard so have been working with Roger Hunt, the RSP Registrar and Janspeed to get a new batch made up as there seems to be a demand for the RSP S exhausts. However, Janspeed had lost the jig so currently have Tommy and his original Janspeed exhaust down with them so they can make a new jig so we can finally get the correct exhaust made. If you would like more info on these or would like to order one, please contact Roger via the RSP website - http://www.rsp-coope...co.uk/index.htm

In the meantime, I hope you don't mind, but here is a pic of Tommy when I dropped him off :-)

Tanya, that information is fantastic thank you! I'll contactRoger for more info, I was in touch with him recently after putting my car on the RSP register.

Has anybody else been able to compare the exhausts?

My RSP S has a Janspeed exhaust or that is what the label says. The service history shows a new Janspeed exhaust in 1996 but there is a receipt for a RC40 type box from Steve Harris (ex Downton) in 2004. I have just made contact with the original owner of 22 years and I hope to discover the truth.
I am also hoping I might have a chance of getting a replica set. Roger said he would email me but I must make sure he does not forget.
I am always interested in 'S' conversions. I think it would be good to start a Cooper S Conversion Register.

Tommy and I'd be in if you did start a Cooper S Conversion Register :-)

As you know, I love my RSPs and my husband has had his from new - they're just great fun.:D. However, the S just adds extra fun and Tommy is the best Mini that I've driven and definitely has the ear to ear grinability factor - he's brilliant :D

I've had both a Janspeed manifold and centre exit exhaust and a Maniflow manifold plus RC40 on my Mainstream. Neither used the Cat. Both performed the same except the RC40 was quieter than the Janspeed which became 'boomy' after a while as all the silencer filler blew out. I like the look of both of them.
The Janspeed centre exit exhaust was different to the one fitted by Cooper garages to the S conversions that retained the cat. A 1990 car did not need a power sapping catalytic converter and the version John Cooper sold was uber expensive. I still have the 1996 Maniflow/RC40 combination.

Unless you're into concourse I wanted stress over it too much - exhausts are an item that change and I don't think using an RC40 will make it less 'period'.

I am in favour of keeping it as original as possible. There can be a point when your certified John Cooper conversion just becomes another conversion. A car the age and rarity of the RSP is fast becoming a classic. I do not think it's just a matter of being concours.
Interestingly some people have modified their cars for even better performance but have kept the original parts so they can always be reinstated. There are some aspects of the 'S' conversion that were done for reasons of nostalgia than was essential. It is debatable whether the twin SUs were any better than the standard single carb but I like to think it is an improvement. The air box was more retro styling that the best solution. Many, including mine, have been replaced with K&N filters. Sadly I do not have the original to keep in store. Nor do I have the red steering wheel as mine was replaced very early on with the John Cooper Mota-Lita wheel, which I prefer. I do have the original red ignition leads and the original coil however.

Thank you for the info everyone.

Minidizzy - I have K&Ns on mine at the moment although I do have the original air box too. The K&Ns do seem to make it rev a little more freely.

It's not necessarily concourse I'm seeking as I wouldn't be able to enjoy the car but I at least want all of the parts to make it original.

Looks like all of us RSP owners are aligned with our desires :) I too am trying to keep my RSP original, would love it to be an 'S' but alas it is not, though many times, & came close on occasions of self converting it to 'S' spec. Spoke to Janspeed about the head, and although they do not supply the converted 'S' heads anymore they could, & would be perfectly happy to Engineer my current head to the exacting 'S-pack' spec.
Although (up until possibly now) the unavailability of the Janspeed exhaust I could get it to 100% S-spec performance; although without that body plate & certificate it could never carry the 'S' dna so now firmly decided to keep it a factory RSP.
I replaced my inlet, LCB, & exhaust for full twin box, side exit maniflow back in July and only done about 150miles on it so not really warranting an upgrade to a Janspeed exhaust right now >_< but would be interested in getting a Janspeed exhaust for future RSP needs.

It's all in Roger's hands now, I hope. I sent him 14 photographs plus the montage I put together. I have also been trying to reconstruct the label in InDesign with reasonable success but I have not finished it yet.
I have a picture very similar to your avatar.
Best wishes.
