Having worked in the additive industry as a formulator for around 8 years, I can see there is a lot of nonsense being talked here!!
anything to do with thornton research?

I think Bob was after a more straightforward response, ie "yes it's a good idea and try this oil", or "don't bother".

Whatever oil you use, be it treacle or cooking oil, change it regularly, once it's black and smells then change it, don't wait for any particular time or mileage interval.
