I doubt the idler on that engine is shimmed correctly anyway, as it seems to have rather a lot of RTV oozing out of the union along with the gasket... and I'm not sure how you measure the thickness of compressed gasket goop !

With a compressed gasket goop thickness tester of course, silly :D

I bet you are quite right there. But a bit too much end float, whilst not ideal, is better than pinching up the transfer gear due to a poor quality gasket which is too thin. There was a spate of those too thin gaskets a couple of years ago.
