Hi everyone. I'm very confused as recently put Rover Cooper wheels on my Mayfair, and noticed today that on every wheel there is one nut which seems a bit wobbly. It's not the caps on the locking ones as they're fine, it's the ends if the normal ones.

Thing is they are a tight as they will go and it's only the end of the nuts which wobble slightly, doesn't feel like the nut itself ie the but in contact with the rim. Is this the design or is something very wrong? Help!

could it be the wrong nuts for the wheel ? is it bottoming out on the hub before gripping the wheel ? - some have different profiles

or the PCD wrong ? should be 4 inch - not 100mm which was on some late (k series) metro's ?

if they are torqued up correctly , and you can wobble them by hand - then there is something really wrong

don't drive it

The nut itself is tight on the wheel but the outer bit just moves like a millimetre each way. It doesn't undo the inner bit how ever much i try. It's like the outer bit is separate?! This is a brand new set of nuts and defo not the locking ones (I'm not that stupid!)

PCD no idea. The wheels are genuine Rover ones 4.5x12s. The nuts were put on at a mini specialist and they all look the same...

I reiterate i can't undo the nut by hand, just the end moves a tiny bit if i wiggle it. And this is only 4 out of the 12 standard nuts.

Are you using this type of nut:
If so - the shiny chrome part is only a cover and can move a little. Underneath is the proper nut and that should be fine.

They are like this. The left most one is normal (the one on the right of it is the locking nut)....

Yep, Rover used then to convert imperial nuts to 17mm . They were only a push fit new, but two of mine have escaped

im guessing the bit thats wobbling is indeed just the pressed cover. its not intended to be removed, so not a cover in that respect, just to make the head of the nut look prettier.

i HATE these nuts! having worked on tons of minis with these nuts on, you always end up using about 4 different sized sockets to succesfully get the nuts off! 2 imperial and 2 metric.

the cover alows the socket to slip if your not carfeull, then the cover is stuck in the end of the socket, then the remaining head of the nut underneath ends up being 16mm (i think, cant be sure off the top of my head now) and so on it goes. total pain in the arse. if you ever had a puncture at the side of the road you could end up coming unstuck!

using these may not look so good, but the head does fit your socket properly and saves the faff!

I agree, part number http://www.minispare...c/NAM9075.aspx. Also depends on the age of the alloy. I think the change happened about 1990

I had the wheels on my old mgzr powdercoated, and for the first two weeks of having the wheels on the car, i had to constantly keep retorquing the wheels, they did eventually settle down and stay tight in the end.

Ok ok. I take back my earlier comment about me not being stupid!!

Had another look at the car, they are indeed caps. In fact i can make them all wobble if i try! Cannot get any of them off for love nor money so obviously they are just meant to stay on.

Still looks like my wheels aren't falling off after all. Thanks for your help everyone :)

Thought it was a real nut you were on about - not a cover

so just thin chrome plated covers were loose then

thought you had wrong PCD & it was bending the stud over & the nuts were grounding on the wheel hole off set

glad it's something simple
