Hi

Me and a couple of mates are going to Europe for 2 weeks this summer. I'm trying to plan a route at the moment but am abit lost on where to go. I did a trip to the south of France, Italy (Turin of course), Switzerland and Germany. I really want to go to the North so Norway, Sweden, Germany and Poland. Anyone been that way or have an good recommendations. We want to split the driving with some touristic stuff so some nice towns/citys with interesting history/drinking are also on the agender.

So what have you guys been out and achieve and where would you recommend?

I go to a lot of those places you mentioned with work in particular Denmark, however beware Scandinavia is eye wateringly expensive especially for beer, that said it would be awesome to drive there. From Hamburg you can head North and then cross to Denmark on the Rodbyhavn ferry crossing, from there head North into Copenhagen proper and then you can cross over to Malmo in Sweden by the Oresundsboen tunnel (Dragon tail in Swedish), it's then up to you where you go from there however you're likely to have to return the same way after which is not much fun.
Me & the girlfriend each summer head accross the continent with the tent and 'go somewhere' we drove to Barcelona in the summer just gone & spent a lot of time in the Pyrenees which was great, albeit cheating though as I leave my mini in the garage and go in my Octavia estate.
For 2013 we are lightly planning a trip via Berlin, Wroclaw, Krakov, then back through Brno, Munich, Reutlingen, Luxembourg and then back to the channel tunnel. Obviously there will be many stops & stop-overs inbetween those, but make a zig-zag path planning travelling by the big cities & you can't go wrong! Awesome way to spend some quality time.

European road trips are great, I try to do one every year, once you are through the Euro Tunnel the whole continent is out there to explore.........sad that fewer young drivers get to experience this nowadays because of cheap air travel and high fuel costs.......but I would recommend it to all who like driving! I also cheat now and leave the MIni in the garage and go in my new MINI or Mercedes C-Class as the family car.

Mappy below is good for planning routes and calculating fuel /road toll costs in Europe:

Dragons tail ... Someone's pulling your leg! You are right the sweden ain't the cheapest. Think 6 quid a beer and 70 quid a night in a crap hotel.

I live in Malmo and visit Copenhagen regular (only takes 20 mins), both great cities- plus zlatan ibrahimovic grew up here :)

There is a small but healthy mini / English classic car scene here, you might want to integrate that into your trip. Am sure we could sort something out.

Our trip 2 years ago ....

I thoroughly recommend gydinia/ gdansk in Poland. north west, lots of history...

One minute its cold war bombed out the next its super modern.

Bergen in Norway... A city nestled between seven mountains. And the road goes up them.

Copenhagen is lovely... The naked mermaid is fun!

Some great comments here and couldn't agree more about driving. Its one of the best ways to explore. I remember on my last trip stopping for lunch and having a swim in an alpin lake then driving to Monico in the evening and swimming in the med all in one day :)

This is my plan thus far, utilising the night ferry to get to demark as there is nothing worse than back tracking. Does anyone recommend somewhere to go after this point or even on the way for that matter.

I did want to make a stop at nurburg on the way home. I've been twice already but for me its the esscence of europe. The madness of a unrestricted toll road :)

My dad was just telling me he has been from Southend to France Into Belgium to Luxembourg through to the Black forest to Switzerland . After this he went on the Simplon Pass down into Italy, Pisa along the Mediterranean Coast to Monte Carlo, Marseille, Nice and Various over places. On the Way back he went up through Spain, Andorra back through France to the ferry. Took him 2 months in his 850 Mini Deluxe with his mate. He did just say some of it might be in the wrong order :L

Yeah guys, Swedish beer is both expensive and not easily available. That's why all the swedes come down to Copenhagen on the weekends. And yes. Copenhagen has good pubs, beer and night life, if that's what you want.
Beer prices are generally rather low in Denmark for reasons of encouraging tourists (especially swedes) to spend money.
