I must admit that instead of looking cheap, as the vans were supposed to look, that last one in particular does look superb.

Why not just use a steel bonnet? The fg ones are more or less ok, as the bonnet is non-structural, but they flex, which may make the paint crack, and look and feel cheap. Also, in many cases there is a lot of work to do, finding a way to fit the hinges etc.

I just think the 's' bonnet is different to be honest but I never knew they flexed and the ones linked gave places for hinges etc

Thanks to everyone for this fourm, I've removed the lip off my bonnet today that was easy enough with a chisel and drill! All I've got to do is now work out a way to fit the grille but then be able to remove it for mechanical work. Has anyone got any ideas of how to do this? My thoughts was to fabricate a bracket onto the mini itself and then weld a couple of bolts onto the rear side of the grille

You could do it that way, with something like wing nuts on the inside. You may find that the filled-in area at each end of the grille is an appropraite place to weld the bolts. and they may line up nicely with the remnants of the original metalwork, or you can weld in a couple of angles or channels from top to bottom of the front panel.

The original Paddy Hopkirk quick release buttons, as you probably know, used a single 1/4" UNF bolt each side, and so similar bolts, used on the inside, should be equally satisfactory.

Never seen that combination before, but if you like it, and like to be different, why not? Personally, I think the plain, unadorned van grille looks better, but there are other factors such as the paint scheme which influence that.

I have a 61 van and only thing I would say is remember that you WILL have to fettle with the distributor at some stage and with the grill being welded in doesn't make it the easiest job... Ended up buying a foot long flat head screw driver for the points.... Stubby doesn't quite work.....

Looks ace though...
