Spoke to my mate today about having the engine bay painted, I've settled on gloss black, the bulkhead, inner wings, radiator/slam panel and the underside of the bonnet will be painted along with the exposed areas of the chassis, should look quite nice when done.

The bulkhead will be reshaped/hit with a big hammer to get a bit more clearance for the distributor, at the moment it touches. The inner wings will be tidied up too as they have been hacked a bit when they were cut to give a bit clearance for the front clip, (Chevy Nova front suspension grafted onto the original chassis)

I'll have to start looking for more engine bay shiny bits now!

Ahh, so pre & post. I did a big burnout round near mine, then when leaving Si's later on, another big smokey burnout, hence the big thick black line on the main road

Bit prep for the engine coming out.

Bonnet is off

It's bigger than I thought!

Radiator cover/slam panel off
Posted Image

Looking a bit bare now

The rad will be out and going for a re-core this week, means there's not going to be any sludge or crap being pumped round the new engine. I also enquired about having a new exhaust fabricated with some headers, possibly an x pipe and the exhausts poking out in the current position. They reckon around £900-£1000! Better start saving!

One other thing, now that I've got a bit dexterity back in my hand, one thing I needed to sort is why I had intermittent dash lights. It turns out that there's a few terminals on the headlight switch for different light modes, i.e., sidelights on in the sidelight position, but then turn off with the dipped beam, then there's the terminal I had the dash lights connected to, that terminal was connected to a light dimmer built into the switch, I had no idea it was there! That would explain why then turning the switch knob clockwise, the dash lights would come back on, (LED's so not dimmable) Swapped that over and added some proper Japanese bullets to the wiring for the dial illumination and windscreen washer switch illumination.

Crap pic, sorry!

Now means I have dash lights again.

Engine was supposed to be coming out today but Chris, the guy who's doing it had a nightmare of a day so didn't get a chance, if he has the time, he'll have a look tomorrow. I thought I'd make it a bit easier for him and speed things up by taking some of the bolt on items off.

And the final finishing touch for the new engine, a shiny new air cleaner wing nut as I somehow lost the one that was on!

Hopefully, by tomorrow night, I should be at the stage where I can degrease the engine bay ready for it being prepped & painted!

I've given myself a month to get the new engine in, glass in, seat frame finished and the carpet in, basically, the next monthly American & classic car meet at the Metro centre.

Engine is one step closer to coming out, Chris couldn't do it today due to his workload and his wife being in hospital so I said I would get it as close to coming out as possible. This is where it currently stands:

All the bolts accounted for and labelled so I know where they all go. Cleaned a few of them up that will be on show using the wire wheel on the bench grinder.

How the engine currently looks. You'll notice how bare it looks.

Power steering pump up out of the way
Posted Image

Manifold off along with the starter motor, fuel pump and spark plugs out. Don't worry, I'm not re-using the spark plugs, they're just out so there's no compression for when the need to turn the engine over by hand to get to all of the flex plate bolts |& torque convertor.

Ugly cast manifolds
Posted Image

Sub 100 mile use fuel pump, that will be getting refitted
Posted Image

Starter motor which put up a bit of a fight as the stupid 8mm nut holding the exciter wire on was just spinning on a partially stripped thread on the mounting stud. In the end I just chopped off the ring terminal to get it out of the way.
Posted Image

Complicated engine wiring harness, don't know how I'll manage tidying this up! :D
Posted Image

So really, just the engine mounts and a couple of other bits and it will be out.
