I'm one step closer to it running tonight.

Started off this afternoon when I took the engine round on the crane to Chris' to have the flex plate bolts torqued and the balancer pressed onto the crank.

You can see where this is going!

Swapped the valve covers as it's easier to do outside the truck

After a lot of wrestling, pry bars, pulling and pushing....

Knackered now though, and maybe just a tiny bit happy!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I'm hoping for roughly 300bhp once it's run in, so should hopefully go quite nicely!

Was supposed to be working today, but torrential rain meant that I had to call the job off as fitting CCTV in the rain doesn't really work.  So, I cracked on and got a fair bit done on the engine.

First off was getting the power steering pump back on.

It looks a bit crap if I'm honest, you can get a chrome cover for the reservoir but I don't know if that would be a bit too much, what I probably will do is buy a chrome pulley for it to match everything else.

Gave the chassis and the engine bay a quick wipe down with some Chemical Guys 'Bare Bones'.  Smells really nice, in fact, the engine smells of bubblegum!  It's phenomenal stuff, there was still some residue left over from when the primer and guide code were flattened back on the bulkhead, despite being snow foamed, brushed and rinsed, this stuff got rid of it all in seconds.

Finished off the wiring for the engine, mainly the heat proof and braided sleeving and routed it down at the base of the bulkhead so it's tucked out of the way.

26390575426222-vi.jpg
This is the starter motor wiring where the braided meets the heatproof sleeving as it runs quite close to the exhaust manifold
28390575428599-vi.jpg
Alternator to starter solenoid wiring takes the same route so did that too
31390575431096-vi.jpg
35390575435363-vi.jpg
I've ran the wiring a bit different to how it originally was, it's now further away from the manifold but will be better protected by the sleeving
38390575438108-vi.jpg
Alternator and choke wiring in place
40390575440085-vi.jpg
42390575442320-vi.jpg

Bolted the carb in and added the fuel line, I'll have to wait until the carpet is in before I can mount the accelerator pedal and the linkage & brackets onto the carb itself .  Handily, the fuel line hides the wiring nicely from the side.
05390592865844-vi.jpg
Not so much from the front though.
08390592868249-vi.jpg

Can you guess which bit I fitted next?
15390592875846-vi.jpg

Air filter!!!  I love the look of it, definitely better than the round one.

HT Leads arrived this morning, so built up the holders, unsure if they'll be long enough to reach the distributor with them in the holders so may need to buy the DIY kit and make them up myself  to the right length:(
43390592903398-vi.jpg

Exhaust manifolds were next.  Nice easy job thanks to all the access I have to them with the wheels off.  I wasn't looking forward to fitting them as I thought mating them up to the rest of the exhaust would be a bit of a nightmare but they pretty much walked on.
52390592912489-vi.jpg
57390592917337-vi.jpg
01390592921367-vi.jpg

That was it really, I'm mainly waiting for the carpet to come back before I can mount the servo, pedals and steering column.  Once they're in, that'll mean the accelerator and kickdown cables can be added to the carb, gear shift linkage can be mounted to the column, and once the power steering pulley has been delivered and fitted, the radiator can go back in then I think it's pretty much ready to be fired up!!!!

Mmmm by my reckoning there is plenty of room there for a very cheeky supercharger. Ohh and a nice dose of Nitrous as well.

Funny you should mention a supercharger.....

That's what I have planned for a couple of years time!  Cylinder heads next year to see roughly 400bhp, then a 'charger for roughly 500bhp!

Now that gets my vote. 500+ ponies and near as much the same amount of torques will make for much merriment and some very brown undercrackers.  :D  :D  :D

Got the torque converter and the flex plate bolted together this afternoon, sorted a leak from the transmission sump, turns out I didn't check the sump plug was nipped up so it was leaking.  I'll check tomorrow to see if it's stopped leaking!

Tidied the unit out this afternoon too as I'd left it in a bit of a state over the last few weeks with puddles of transmission fluid, power steering fluid, engine oil etc all over the floor and parts all over the place, mainly in the office taking over my desk, I think my dad was starting to get a bit pissed off with it.  That meant pulling the truck outside and couldn't resist a few pics.

Thanks.

Couple of parts I ordered last week:

Chrome transmission dipstick to match the engine one
31390914911753-vi.jpg

Found out why the power steering reservoir has been leaking, the cap has been bodged with what looks like a rubber glove to try an seal it, so that has been replaced
33390914913770-vi.jpg

And the power steering pulley, doubt I'll be able to use it as it looks slightly different to the current one, I think the original is a tapered fitting, the new one has the slot for a woodruff key. It's a slightly smaller pulley too so don't know if I'll have enough adjustment on the pump bracket to take up the slack.
39390914919155-vi.jpg

Might have to get the original one stripped and chrome dipped instead.

I've compiled another list of things that's needed again.  This time, all the small jobs that usually get forgotten about until the last minute:

Transmission dipstick

Servo

Brake lines

Bleed brakes

Brake pedal assembly

Throttle pedal

Throttle and kickdown cable brackets on inlet/carb

Radiator

Radiator hoses

Transmission fluid

Power steering fluid

Engine oil

Coolant

Drive belts

Adjust the fuel line and relocate the filter to before the pump

Figure out a route for the engine temp sender wiring

Fit steering column

Attach gear shift linkage

Vacuum line to gearbox

Carb to distributor vacuum advance

Wire up distributor

Attach the fan to the new rad

Attach the transmission cooler to the rad

Figure out what I'm going to do with the washer bottle.  For that, I was thinking of using a one from something like a 5 series BMW as the main bottle is about the right size and shape to be mounted in the wheel arch with just the filler discretely poking through the inner wing inside the engine bay.  I'll have to scour some scrapyards and see what will work best.

Lets see how much I can tick off that list this afternoon!
