i have been thingking of buying a cheap rover metro and swapping some fo the panels to make it look like a mk1. i thought that would be easier than modifying the inner wings etc to get a bigger lump under the bonnet of an a series metro.
got my drums turned down today so its now running the original track width at the rear again.

That is no mean feat unless you're experienced in bodywork and fabrication, aside from how it looks the Mk2 and Mk3 Austin/Rover Metro engine bay and front panels are very different I'm certain you know that already, but its practically a different car front the scuttle/baulkhead forwards.

i am aware of that mate, i have spent many an hour working on metros of all varieties.
my reason for considering doing it this way is that in my eyes, to buy a rover metro with a vvc already in, then converting the metal work on the front so that it just looks different, is easier (certainly for me anyway) as basically its just asthetics.
rather than buying an earlier car, buying an engine, buying a subframe, chopping the front of the car about to make the engine bay wider, then wiring it in, then sorting all the other bits like a fuel pump. and then there is the problem of having rover hubs on the front and austin ones on the back.
i would just rather be working on panels making them fit th erover front end, than doing an engine conversion and all the other faffing about

we pondered which route would be best, get a honda civic estate then swap the engine to the diesel and make it look like a rover 45. or would it be easier to get a diesel rover 45 and graft the back end of a civic estate onto it.
we opted for grafting a back end on, but then he sold the 45 to someone and we forgot all about it. asthetics are easier to change than everything else on the car.

anyway i picked that spare wheel up today, £6.60 off ebay. it did invlolve a full days outing and about 200 miles round trip. worked in a visit to oxford on the way back, and pub lunch with dad so wasnt too bad!
the tyre fitted is brand new, and a falken. sadly its nothing like the right size so ill take it off and ebay it again. then refurb the wheel. thats tomorrows job.

that is just the greatest compliment ever, thank you very much. its nice to know it both looks in good condition and looks "authentic" i have ideas for things i want to do, but i dont want to lose that from the car.

the reg on the car, which i have seen in another thread, is very similar to mine. and secondly, that front spoiler is brilliant. i have been looking for one of these for a while. i had one for my very first car when i was 16 but never fitted it. i think it was about £30 then though! i would have to do it colour coded though.
its the same thing that can be seen here.....

some of the pics in this guys flickr account are worth a look too. some early 80s track cars there, and some super sexy retro alloyw wheels too.
