I have used a heat gun before but much prefer a kettle of boiling water. Pour it on the sticker and it softens the glue and you can peel it off; keep pouring the water as you progress along the stripe. It works a treat and you can make a nice cup of tea at the same time (don't pour it on your hands). ;D

Yes, do not use washing up liquid on exposed metal or rubber parts as the salt will affect them. A better soap is 'car wash' as it (in most cases) does not contain salt. Check the label before you used it.

The worse place to use washing up liquid is installing windows as it causes rust on the edges.

Just be aware that when you peel away the decals (particularly the bonnet stripes), you may well reveal paint that hasn't seen the light of day since the car left the factory, which will probably be very noticeable against the rest of the car that's had twelve or so years of paint fade on it!

Don't use t-cut either. Nasty medievil stuff O_O .

The best way to remove sticky from paint, believe it or not is with tar and adhesive remover (Tardis, Oblitarate or similar). ;D
