I finished up the tunnel today and the handbrake lever:

I cleaned out the car today and made a start on the dreaded rooflining. I've tentioned it to get the wrinkles out :

Just stumbled across your thread, a brilliant read so far Jared !

I have to say, that Mitsubishi blue pearl is absolutley gorgeous and your doing some great work. I was amazed to see how rust free your car is when you stripped the stone chip off the inner wing, you don't see that in England !

I'm so envious of the weather you have in South Africa, I'd love to live somewhere like you do, it must be great for working on cars.

Just take your time with the headliner and you should be fine mate, it's all about patience with this job :-)

Thanks Jay :) it's difficult being out here and having quick access to parts, so a lot of it is done on my own. As you say, the climate really does make a difference, especially with the warm summer months. If I'm honest, there was no rust on her, just a bit of surface here and there.

The rooflining should be a fun task! I've just put it in to get it to start straightening out and lose the creases. I'll leave it a while before I glue.

Hey man, does the handbrake lever have a rubber boot on it that covers the cables?

Also the generalisation that the weather in South Africa is great is hilarious. Cars are the coast suffer quite badly from rust due to moisture and salty sea air :)

It doesn't, no. I quite like it without a cover.

I suppose you're right about the weather. This car was an up country car from new, so that has helped out a bit. I think it's also down to how the car is looked after, especially at the coast.

I was curious about the handbrake boot cover, cause someone mentioned it before and mine didn't have one, so I didn't know.

Yeah if you park outside at the cape, your car will rust. It is a lot better if parked in a garage. Also the older minis don't suffer as much from rust, think they had thicker steel.

I don't think our cars ever had them to be honest. They can be bought separately or you could have one made - it'll stop those pesky passengers from fiddling with things.

That's true. The late '70s and '80s Minis out here were made out of tuna cans. Definitely not made like the older cars.

Haha, I normally don't have any passengers in my car :) And the last time I did they left flowers inside, I was rather annoyed.

Yeah, passenger rules are important :) 1) No eating in my car; 2) No questioning my driving, however bad it is :P
