Hi Mark

Thanks for the heads up. Yes I'm using photobucket

The pictures of the water splash shield load OK. After that, they load briefly then dissapear to the image code

Imgur is much better - a pain to have to transfer everything though!

Photobucket is not a long term option, it's a problem of their making, imgur.com works well and is easier to use and is a long term solution. Don't delete any entries using photobucket but I suggest you start using imgur.com from now on.

I've removed the duplicated images.

Photobucket is best left to its own devices. Use Imgur for now until I can find the time to finish our in-house solution :-).

So you've removed the duplicated pictures and now we can't see the ones Petrol had re-posted.

Must be something to do with the servers and fire wall on the works computer that I'm using because I can see them on my tablet that I have with me.

Tensioners can be unreliable on a duplex setup. The pad isn't wide enough and they get ripped to bits

Is that the twin cam version?  ;D

Looks like it. 'Ive messaged Minispares to ask what the problem is.

Why is this build so "challenging"? I have built loads of cars but this one is proving to be a pain.

The chain has a split link which I'm not keen on. It goes on and on the problems!

I have done a lot of research and had a lot of help from people who know what they are doing on this build. The bottom end has to be right to take the revs and the cam has to be timed properly......

Andrew from Retrominis, who is helping me on the engine build has suggested that the end float on the crank should be more like 4-5 thou on my engine. A screamer needs a bit more clearance when revving 7K plus so I have changed a couple of thrust washers and now have 4 thou.... just.
He also suggested a 10 thou clearance between the conrod / big end. I checked these and they are 9 thou. For a "road" car I'm happy with that.

Next is the cam which is a VP3 scatter cam. The principle behind a scatter cam is to compensate for the siamese ports in the head. Since the ports have different lengths a scatter cam will open the valves at different times for each cylinder to compensate. It's like having a separate cam for each cylinder resulting in optimised valve duration.

If you time a conventional cam out by 2-3 degrees, 2 of the cylinders will produce more power whilst the other 2 will produce a bit less. In addition, cams can be timed to give a bit more torque at the bottom end and a bit less power at the top. It's not really a big issue on a road car if a conventional cam is slightly out.
It's a different story with a scatter cam since the valve duration is optimised for each cylinder. If it's advanced or retarded it will open and close the valves at the wrong time for every cylinder resulting in all 4 producing less energy.

In theory, the VP3 should give fast road cam performance at the bottom end and race type cam performance at the top, all because the charge to each cylinder is optimised. In addition, when the exhaust valves open, there will be less force required to exhaust the spent charge. This is known as pumping losses and reducing resistance will reduce the amount of heat generated. If you put your finger over the end of a bicycle pump, it's hard to press and generates heat. It's the same thing. Less losses mean more revs and more power.

When you're looking at high lift cams, it's best to have one ground from a blank. Regrinding a cam will greatly reduce the circumference of the lobes to achieve the required lift. This can cause all sorts of problems especially with the lifters.

I won't settle for less than best, It's proving problematic at the moment though with some suppliers being totally useless.

thanks for the explanation on the cam stuff, very educational. wheels and tyres look gorgeous, did you have any difficulty in finding somebody who could work with 10" rims? and whats the reason for the inner tubes?

thanks :highfive:
