Those alloy parts have come up brilliantly by the way, I know what I'll be doing with mine now.....

Only too glad to help :D

I have said it before and want to say it again. This build would not have been possible without Phil, he has been instrumental in it's concept and direction.... Mucho respect notworthy_zps33f76222.gif

Gear kit has arrived. It was covered in a protective film that I cleaned off, I then re oiled everything

Thanks ^^^^

Fitted the Osram nightbreaker plus bulbs to the Cibie headlights

Beam pattern

I want to fit these indicator lamps to the dash as the stock ones look a bit "heavy"

1491_zpstxi4lad8.jpg

This requires these illumination tubes cutting off the dial assembly

1492_zpsifrixxdh.jpg

To do this I used a dentist's drill (proper name is a burr) these are great for intricate work

1493_zpsqkmkv29d.jpg

1494_zpskqnvkene.jpg

I then used this rotary file

1495_zpsytcgmryb.jpg

To tidy it up

Gearbox is ready to be built. To prevent the bling being scratched.....

1497_zps5mbwtjei.jpg

I have taped some foam to the bottom

1498_zpsahfrqgqw.jpg

This foam is quite high density, not some flimsy stuff as it will eventually have to take the weight of the engine as well.

The bulbs are white rather than yellow :D

Been working on the wiring/dash. New oil temp gauge

1499_zpsse0zjhmr.jpg

I was planning on fitting the sender straight in the gearbox but for fear of weakening the casing, bought this sump plug adapter

1500_zpsd8nv6ybs.jpg

Sprayed the dash in black 2K followed by quite a few coats of clear, this should give a deep shine

1503_zpsmbuv2kev.jpg

Also sprayed a few coats of clear on the carbon wrapped centre console upright section

Engine / box / clutch spec is almost sorted as follows -

998 A+ block (stronger than pre A+ due to the webbing and also allows more options in terms of dizzy)
Bored +40 thou to take flat top pistons using pre A+ rods
Crank ground -10 thou with new bearings
Centre strap on main bearing (not really necessary on a 998)
New camshaft bearings
Duplex vernier timing gear
Med alloy timing plate
Fully balanced including pistons & rods

Head

12G295 998 Cooper
Fully ported
Rimflo 1.25 inlet
Rimflo 1.1 Ex
Unleaded seats fitted to exhaust valves
Bronze wasted valve guides
1.5 :1 ratio roller rockers

Clutch and flywheel

Pre verto clutch diaphragm (lighter than verto)
4.23kg ultralight flywheel using a pre engaged ring.

Gearbox

All new bearings
SC CR Ripspeed / Jack Knight gear kit
New genuine pins and balls
Central oil pick up pipe
4 pin diff (Don’t think I will need an lsd due to the low torque + long 1st gear)
CWP 4.33:1 (on 10” rims)

Fuel

2X 1¼” SU’s fully rebuilt with all new parts – (Yep I know singles are more reliable but prefer the sound of 2)
Piper cross air filters (Noisy so hopefully some induction roar)
5 ½ Gallon tank

Not sure if a pair of stub stacks would help on the carbs
Not a clue what cam to use but I want it to be a bit of a arse to start, run lumpy on idle then sing when it’s revving. That said, it’s a road car – a bit of a tall order!
Again, no idea what LCB or exhaust system to use though I do have a new RC40 for a 1275.

Just to add, what would an engine of this spec rev to?

Thanks for any help and advice

Mine will Rev to 7000 rev limit set at 7500. IMO if you start to hit 8000+ you will need to think about engine strip downs and rebuilds on a regular basis.

Plus no point reving it anymore if the power drops off. The rollers will show that..

Is it worth replacing the flywheel in a verto system? If yes what would be the choice for a road going car?

Thanks Phil,  I could do with VTEC   Best of both worlds

Thanks, there's no point putting a leg out of bed after all this effort so will work on 7500. I also understand the A series is 50's technology ;D

I went for the heaviest of ultralight flywheels from Minisport but it's important not to go too light for a road car. The rotational weight saving equates to quite a lot more in terms of overall weight (IIRC X8) also the ability for the engine to rev easier. As always there's a downside which is a lumpy idle and the car will stall easier.

Couple of questions :D

I bought some seals to fit around the wheel arches....

1504_zps3sq8pqrk.jpg

Personally, I don't like em but a few friends have said it looks better with them. Pic without the seals

1505_zpsde0m5g9h.jpg

I would value any feedback

The second question is about the timing cover which I have 2. The one on the left has a round breather, the one on the right has an oval shaped breather. Am I right in thinking that the oval shaped breather was used on MPI's to give more clearance? Since I'm now going 998, can I use the one on the left?

1506_zps2msvidkl.jpg

Also, what's that bracket for?

This is why I want to use the one on the left, it's proper stuff ;D

1507_zpsdz7rv4sk.jpg

Thanks for looking

Pete
