The main issue at the moment, is not the lack of HP, but the "kangarooing" at low revs which is pretty bad. I'm fully aware there will be little power and torque at low revs but it shouldn't kangaroo. Something is seriously wrong
I paid to have the carb fully modded which included the body modded to increase airflow and all the breathers / vac advance port were blocked off.
When I built the car, I fitted a vac gauge. It's typical for any engine to pull well over 20" of vac during overrun. This engine has never pulled anywhere near that amount of vac. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's wrong and after all this effort, it's kind of taken the wind out of my sails.
This car is on the back burner at the minute as I'm trying to find a stock hif 38 to rebuild and fit.
When I find one, I'll take it from there. That's all I can do for now.

Did they replace throttle spindle, butterfly and spindle bushings? I agree with above, if its never pulling high vacuum you have a vacuum leak. are you sure the ports have been correctly blocked off.

I drove the car into my garage almost 12 months ago and it's been there ever since.
To say I feel let down on the final hurdle is putting it mildly.
It has all the right bits fitted to it, make no mistake I went the extra mile to make this Mini the "one"
Despite the brand new Ripspeed / Jack night SC CR gearbox kit..... Yes you read it right, and the insane amount of money I spent on the engine, it just didn't work out. It crunches in second, and it didn't output the expected HP.
I will cut to the chase, if anyone is interested, it might be for sale
Plz no time wasters

Oh Pete, that is such a shame after all the work you put in.

Leave it there until the Spring, huge amount of work gone into this. Everything is solveable.
Sometimes best just to forget about it for a while.

Bolt a good working order HS4 Carb on with a new jet fitted and a selection of differing profile needles to start with.
The problem is probably something simple.
If not have a rethink on the choice of cam?
I do feel sorry for you on the gearbox side I have to say.
Hoping you continue to persist with a fantastic build

Keep at it Pete, I'm gutted for you too, but as said, it will be curable

If I had the cash, I would buy your mini w/o thinking twice... although my wife tells me I need to finish the projects that I have.

Hi Pete, I think you have done one of the most impressive shell rebuilds and home paint jobs ever to be featured on this forum. This is the hard work, the ‘freezing your nuts off’ hours spent on the driveway or unheated garage whilst everyone else is sitting inside. Been there, done that....and guess what....since then the likes of Integrales and Porsches have all come and gone but 25 years later my Mini is still here and it’s here to stay.
So you have had some clowns involved in rebuilding your engine and ‘box. Same thing happened to me during my first year of ownership with some ‘specialist’ in Nuneaton. In the end of the day, it’s only really one day of hard work to fix.....all the rest of it can be either done in the comfort of your home or outsourced.
Just for a moment imagine a buyer pulling into your drive with say a Crafted Classics 105Bhp 1380 sitting in the back of his Van, fully set up on the engine dyno all jetted and timed, all this sitting on top of a Guessworks rebuilt standard helical gearbox. Nothing fancy or hyper expensive on any account, just some solid engineering that has been proven to be well enough to bring a smile on any Mini driver’s face in about 95% of public road conditions. Upon striking a deal with you, the buyer then removes the bonnet....lifts out the ill breathing 998 and lets the new engine drop in. He then spends another half hour unscrewing the SCCR gearbox from the old 998 and puts it in the back of the Van to save for a later date. At 4 p.m. after 6 hours of steady pace he’s all ready to go, and after asking you whether it’s ok to leave the 998 on your drive since he has no use for it, he then sets off with HIS perfectly tuned and perfectly restored performance Mini. For the next 25 years you’ll keep on remembering your loss, whilst after 25 seconds the other guy has already forgotten what he had just spent....

2020 has been a *******, this is not how you want to end it mate. If anyone else ever felt a mistake in selling, yours would be the biggest! Such a great great job. Maybe in the new year or next summer when we can get out and play you will feel different?
