Nice one on pulling it out Steve, you will find that the folks being 'pedantic' about the history etc etc are most likely jealous of what you have achieved.
You should actually change your name to Polly, the amount of times you had to repeat yourself on here about it being legal.
I wish you all the best with the rebuild which ever way it goes.

As for the rebuild, it goes without saying that the shell has to be retained. the history now is the shell of the car. its provenance was the tunnel, but that has now become its history - a bit like a previous owner on a cars log book - a period in time which has passed. I hope you either fully restore the car to show-winning standard using the original shell, or do just enough remedial work to the shell to enable the car to be (re)comissioned. whatever you do, please don't transform it into a convertible. convertible clubmans are just ugly - there are no two ways about it.
Controversial opinions and thoughts there, but the thread has been pretty controversialso far. i'm 100% behind you restoring this one. it goes without saying that it would be a feature car in the mini magazines due to its provenance (once the editors etc get a whiff of it). all i can say is well done so far - keep up the good work, and i look forward to seeing how the rebuild progresses.

am i right in thinking as this was never registered and put on the road it is technically a 'new' shell? so it can be used to re-shell a gt legally?
no the shell will have it's own vin number as it was intended to go on the road
a new replacement shell wouldn't have a vin number

If you really want to know how to conserve originality, here is the prime example of just how to do it right:

If there is any small thing I can do to help, I'd be happy to

So glad to hear that someone was brave and resourceful enough to save it from it's imminent fate.
Good luck with the project.
