Mini city E 1989 998cc

I've recently replaced the head gasget, swapped the carb for a HIF38 (Number FZK 1414) on a MG metro manifold and fitted the rest of the stage 1 kit. I have not replaced the needle.
I've set the plug gaps, the points, tappets and timing.(although these could be wrong.?.)

Since getting the mini back together and running it seems to have a missfire / doesnt rev smoothly under ( maykes a noice that sounds like a bad missfire and almost stalls) quick acceleration in neutral. although steady acceleration revs smoothly. And when driving, it struggles to set off from a stop making the missfire sound until the revs build up.

(Its worth noting I have put the fuel in to the right place in the carb, however the overflow comes from the pip next to the fuel in. and I have blanked off the outlet above that which is for the "economy filter/ breather" The oil breather pipe is in the correxct place and the outlet pipe just before it meets the manifold I have piped upto a vacuum outlet on the manfold.)

Had it MOT'ed today and the tester believes that the fueling is spot on due to the emmissions reading.

I know thats bit of a mouthfull, but all help is appreciated :)

Thanks,
Matt

If its got the standard needle in the carb for what ever engine it came from it wont be running right anyway, especially as its got larger exhaust system and different carb.

Almost certainly you will need to change the needle. Don't know what to but the lads at Mini Spares will see you right.

100% positive that you will be advised by members on this forum to get it on a rolling road to be correctly tuned. (it is worth it, the change in responsiveness is awesome.)

You may well need a different needle to get the best out of the stage 1 upgrade but I am doubtful that this would make much difference at low engine speed. Before changing the needle I would try to eliminate other possible issues.

You appear uncertain about the tappets, timing etc. The first step would be to check these again and make sure they are correct.

I don't follow your description of plumbing in the carb. It would be worth ensuring that this is correct and that you have not inadvertantly introduced any air leaks etc. A photo of the carb would help.

Do you have oil in the carb dashpot?

Good Luck

Yeah its going to be sent to a rolling road, but at the moment its a case of getting it running well enough to get there! ;)

Carb as below... I've plumbed mine as 1. Blocked off 2.oil breather pipe 3. advance /retard pipe 4.put to vacuum pipe on manifold 5.fuel in 6. overflow.

I know the above isn't standard but seems to be the best configuration for it to run correctly.

I've got the timing right, points right, tappets right. Spark plugs are sooty but with a coffee coloured tip.

Been out all day today testing and adjusting (Colour-tune gives a nice blue colour which backs up what the MOT tester read on the gas tester)

Anymore ideas? When revving with the airfilter off it sounds like its sucking in too much air when revving, the harsher the rev, the more the engine seems to struggle to build up revs. gradual revs are alot better when standing but when driving its very hard to get the car moving and even then traveling along it feels really lumpy

Anymore ideas guys? I start work on monday and would love to be able to drive there in my own car :/

You need to vent pipe 1 to air, and block off no.6. Let me know how it runs.

Me myself and i would start with a "AAA" needle to get it running some where near then get it set up propa.

If your still using the needle from your pre stage 1 kit then it will not work well at all.

Avoid an AAA needle for a st1 998 mini, start with the leaner ABD. Then rolling road tune from there.

But MOT and colourtune are only at 1500rpm. what about the rest of the rev range?
This is where a rolling road makes all the difference.
