Guys, I know what I am about to ask is a long shot, but hay ho. I trust your knowledge and will listen to opinions.
Is there any chance, from these poor photos, that anyone can identify what alternator I currently have? Tell me for a 998cc '84 City E what I should have? or show/tell me how to identify it.
Unfortunately the last owner painted the entire engine in black, including the altenator and I beleive it to be on its last legs. Light on dash seems to be unsure about being on or not, and can change with a blip of the throttle. I took it off and wire brushed most paint off, stupidly I didnt take any photos.
Reguardless of its faults, somewhen in the near future I intend to install a CD unit and speakers, as well as spotlights and other electricals. With this in mind, my old man suggests buying an uprated alternator to deal with this. Any suggestions on what I should go for and what would be sufficient.
Thanks for reading, Jack.

As a rebuilder of alternators that above statement is anything but true.
The Unit in the picture could be 35, 45, 55, 65, or 70 or 72 amps. Judging by its age it would most likley be a stock replacment/rebuild Lucas/Marrelli A127 unit which fitted to this car would have been a 45 amp unit. The only way to identify what you have is from the windings inside. If its a factory original it would have the rover label on it stating what rating it is. However I can see that it has been rebuilt as it has had its original type bolts replaced.
