With a big fat ICE install in preparation I need to confirm what I currently have so I know if I should upgrade or not.

The car is a '94, originally an SPi which I think means it should be a 70amp. But there's some disagreement on spares sites between 55 and 70.

The other issue is that the car has a different engine, so none of the parts can be trusted to be original.
Question is, how does one identify an alternator? On the side it has "REG 701" printed but can't find any reference to that online.

Any help?

Hmm, SPI's actually came with 45 and 55 amp units. If it is a lucas A127 type, They are identified either by the original factory label if fitted, or the colour of the rotor winding insulator (if rebuilt it may have been painted so you need to scrape this off) . White 45 amp, black 55amp, green 65 amp, and blue 70 amp. You will also notice that the rotor windings on a 70 amp unit fill the entirte insides. Where as the 45amp unit its only half full!

Perfect!
Now, could you give me directions to where I find the rotor winding insulator :D
Would that be the plastic 'cap' thing on the side?

No the rotor is inside behind the fan what you circled was the regulator;

The Red arrow shows the rotor, the yellow shows where you can view the insulator colour, remember you might have to scrape paint off it if its a rebuilt unit.

The move is going well, still way off engine work though, need power to workshop first.
