I had a little look inside my engine a while ago, checked the condition of the bores etc and also pulled out the camshaft to see what breed it is. However I couldn't see any obvious markings. So I'm hoping someone on here could help I.D. it for me. I can measure the lobes with a vernier caliper to see what lift there is on the inlet and exhaust and take a few pics but what else do I need to measure and check for someone to work out what it is?

I tried to determine the duration by checking the start and finish of a lobe as in these pictures. Remember the cam turns half the speed of the crank and duration is measured in crank degrees.

Then I looked up the cams on this site for comparison.

I was thinking that I'd need to check the duration, I've a mate who works at an engineering firm who I'm sure would be able to put it on a lathe then check with a gauge for when the lobe will open to when it will close. Both inlet and exhaust lobes have a lift of 6mm, I would've thought they'd been different?

You need to measure lift with accuracy to 0.01mm
When measuring duration, commonly it's measured from the point where the rocker arm has 0.010 inch lift

Ok, I just checked with the first set that came to hand, I'll look tomorrow to see if we have a more accurate set. You say that I should measure duration at the rockers, does this mean I can't measure it straight off the cam itself? Or is there a calculation I have to do if I measure direct from the lobes?

If you measure at the lobe at 0.016" checking height you can compare tot he figures listed in the link above. See my miniworld article for how to measure cams.

If I buy a cam with a slot drive can I simply change my oil pump,A-series block, to suit?

Is your Miniworld article online anywhere AC?

If not, could anyone elaborate on how to measure/confirm camshaft grinds?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Ordered! April 2012, correct? (I hope so..)

What tools do I need to acquire in the next 7-10days before it arrives?

Now to track down those tools and a DTI/ Timing Disc for timing the Cam in.

You need a couple of dial gauges and magnetic bases. Some Dial gauge extensions are also very useful.
