I'm tempted to paint my headlining black just to give a more cosier feel and match in with all the other black trim. Anyone else attempted this? And if so what did you use?

I'm looking for a satin to Matt finish.

Cheers!

Satin or Matt black brush on paint? I swear Hammerite do something which is close to perfect for that, it seeps into the material really well. I can't think for the life of me what it's called though. :( Sorry

I painted my dirty, off-white(?) one grey using vinyl paint in a spray can. Taped off the windows, etc. ahead of time. Worked pretty well...at least until I end up stickerbombing the liner at some point.

Vinyl paint can be very good I have bits of black trim painted blue with good coverage. It behaves more like a dye.

I painted mine with a foam roller and black emulsion and it turned out great.

Theres some pics in my project thread somewhere.

I rubbed it down with thinners on a rag first and just painted straight on.

As jordie says, halfords sell them and they are brilliant, I didn't even need to clean the headliner and stuck fine. 2 cans gets the job done!

I fitted a new black headlining as my old one was well beyond any state of repair. Its a bit fiddly and of course the glass needs to be removed. But it really does make an already small interior, feel really small!! I have a sunroof in mine, just the normal glass type, not like the longer ones you get sometimes. I done it to match the interior but now wish I would have replaced it with what was there before which was off white (or maybe was white but gone off over the years)

I have painted other vinyl parts before but not a headliner IN the car. (I have painted my Mk1 headliner outside the car). The spray can materials vary in quite a bit quality from maker to maker so do a little research before you buy to get the best brand.

Like ALL painting, the quality of your results depend highly on the preparation. Thoroughly clean, degrease, dry, (and if necessary prime) the headliner using the materials and instructions listed on the vinyl paint/dye that you choose. Do not take shortcuts or deviate from the steps the manufacturer suggests. The difference can be dramatic.
