HI there, I've been looking at easy ways to improve acceleration/cruising/other things and have come to the conclusion that an air filter would be a good start. I have the standard Air filter on my non-cooper MPI and have been looking at this:

My question to you all is which would be better, money being no object?

I'm getting the one that is a direct replacement, I.e. goes straight into the original airbox, I'm not saying it's better, I just want it to look stock but gain a bit of induction in the process.

I've just removed my K&N cone type filter and replaced it with the original box with the K&N filter (the exact link on your post)
I've not noticed any change in performance but putting the original plastic filter box back on has certainly made the car a lot quieter. I did this because I want to keep my car as close to factory spec as possible (boring I know)
Putting the plastic box back on certainly leads to quieter motorway driving. The mini hums now rather than growls when accelerating.
I've got a 97 cooper mpi by the way

IF you're planning further mods, go for the 57i or a pipercross/ram air kit.
Otherwise, standard box is fine, but dont expect gains by just fitting a so called performance filter.

I have the cone filter on mine, didnt notice any diffeence performance wise but i like the noise

Another thing to consider is that I am 17, in my first year of fully comprehensive driving and I want to know if fitting the cone filter would affect my insurance premium, as I doubt the direct replacement filter would.
Any thoughts?

K & N filters are considered a performance mod even if they don't increase the bhp by much on their own. If you don't declare the mod to the insurance company then you run the risk of being technically uninsured..............................
Running a cone filter on a very cold day can cause the carburettor to ice up and stick a bit. A K & N filter inside the standard housing negates this

I've always found the cone filters cause more issues than positives on an injection mini. I took mine off and put it back to standard ages ago!
The shorter intakes in a standard box are supposed to be good though.

Why is the K&N 57i cone filter say it’s not for auto trans? What’s the difference on the air intake side?
