Have posted about this before but well it has happened again must be the 6th time now. My fuel has been siphoned out of the car. Have reported it but getting a bit sick of it happening. Living in North London so have no choice but to park on the street. What’s weird is whoever is doing it knows exactly how to remove the filler cap without any damage to the car and then takes the cap. It also did not set off the alarm. Looked in the tank and this time will have to remove it from the car and flush it as at the moment there are the remains of 6 caps in there well the plastic inserts of them.

So anyone got any suggestions. I was thinking of maybe getting an unleaded neck restrictor welded into the tank so at least the bits of the cap will not fall into it like the one attached in the photo. Anyone know where I could get one that fits a mini tank. With regard to alarm anyone got any ideas. It’s a toad AI606 with shock and microwave sensors. Neither went off so was thinking of maybe fitting either an extra shock or microwave sensor between the dank and shell near the filler neck. Advice welcome.

Thanks

It's a bit of work (I think), but ever thought about having the neck inside? So you have to open the boot to fill it up? I've heard someone did this because it happened to them a few times.

I have thought about it but I am going to be shipping the car to Australia next year as moving there with my wife so need to leave it as standard as possible for their rules and regs with regard to personal imports. Is it even legal to have that system as its a carb model would one not get fumes in the car from the tank.

Thanks

Disconnect tank. Plug fuel line hole. Fill tank with unleaded and add 3 bags of sugar.
Let them steal that.
Remove tank.
Remove remnants of filler caps and clean tank.
Place back into service.

Emigrate.

They won't be back .... O_O

Not to sound stupid, but 1. that'll be a waste of petrol if they don't come back before he leaves and 2. what does/will the sugar do to it?

I wasn't entirely serious ....

The sugar will burn, turn to caramel and glue everything up ... or so the urban legend goes. I'll try it one day, before I take something to the scrapyard...

You could get an alternative tank to put in the boot, either an alloy motorsport one or, slightly naughty: http://www.ebay.co.u...be#ht_940wt_852

Up to the job, but not intended for road use and you'd need to sort a breather, just add a hose to the cap running to the outside. The original cap should be sealed so no issue moving that inside.

Of course it won't stop 'em wrecking another filler cap. I was thinking of a magnet and reed switch for that.

I've seen some one drill the neck at right angles & put a couple of metal rods through then put a gauze above them.
Lets fuel in but you cant put a pipe in to syphon it out.

You know they could be siphoning it from the fuel pipe underneath the mini. Don't they have a flexi rubber pipe from the tank then to a solid one that runs down the length of the underside...

Would that be possible?

I had to drain the fuel in mine when i was checking for leaks and crap in the tank and yeah you can get at it from underneath...

I bet they are reading this now anyway... :mmkay:

thurt of an aston style fuel cap?
or get a bracket fabricated to your exsisting fuel cap, weld another on your car so you can put a padlock on it like they do with series landrovers

Chicken wire/ gauze approach works well and doesn't need to be done in a fancy way. Just crumple a bit into a rough ball shape and force down the hole about 4". I had to do it years ago when I was a student living in a real grotty area of Leicester.

You should check the legality before applying most of the well-intentioned suggestions here. For a start, having the filler in the boot is very dangerous and most probably illegal.

I think that a mesh welded into the neck, well down, is legal and effective, but you do need a specialist to weld it into a tank that has contained fuel, as there is a very real risk of explosion due to residual vapour, even after the tank has been empty for a couple of months. It has to be properly purged. I fear that if it is not welded in, they will just push it down into the tank, and still be able to get the hose in.
