If you are 17 and unemployed you really do need to either be in work or full-time further education. At that age you can easily sign-up for a training course at a local college. Then you will genuinly be a trainee or student and that is what you can put on your insurance form. That's one problem solved.
Then contact Aviva who are good with young drivers.
Probably around £2500 for the first year TPF&T on an unmodified Mini with your Mother & Father on as additional drivers.

Just read your post tried Aviva for my son for insurance - if taken out under his name - he's 17, 18 december on a provisional license with a 1990 998 mini flame with me as a named driver TPF&F was almost £7,000. If I took it out in my name with him as a named driver it was over £9,000 - gone on compare the market and for the same policy £717 with Insure 2 Drvive. Couldn't believe how expensive Aviva were and that's on a provisional dread to think how much they'd want when he passes his test!!!
