Oooh, jealous...!!

Looks like every cloud does have a silver lining. Or at least a grey primered one...!!

Good luck with the build Dave!

Keith

Cheers Keith.......weird how things work out eh?

Progress will be slow to start with until I can get the Ibiza back running and out of the garage.

Looks fantastic mate, very jealous

Cheers mate......you won't be jealous of the bill!!!!

Plus, how straight are the floors not going to be after it's first road event....let alone stage rally.  I'm going to end up turning into a bloody show queen trailering the car everywhere and polishing tyres!!!!

Naaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!   ;D

I felt the same first time out in my freshly done car !

If you double skin the floor and strengthen where the subframe mounts then you should be fine ( unless you run out of talent and have a big "moment" lol)

Had a bit of a trial fit of my fibreglass panels I've had stashed for some time.....figured I might end up using them at some point in the not to distant future.  The bootlid cost me £5 and the bonnet was actually an ebay find that came with a dashboard - sold the dash so the bonnet actually left me with £10 profit.....so all in all, they stand me at +£5 BARGAIN!!!!!

PA150319_zps0b9lm7uq.jpg

Surprise surprise the fit of both isn't fantastic.....but for the price i didn't expect it to be awesome first try.  Yes i've got steel panels that came with the shell, but if i can get these to fit, they will probably end up being my preferred option (i'll get both painted just in case though ;D).  Before anyone says....yes i know it's a mk1/2 bootlid.....but to be honest i prefer the shape of them.

Whilst taking a few piccies, i shoved the camera down inside the rear companion bins (as you do!!!)......have you ever seen these this neat and no rot!!!!???????  No, neither have I.

PA150322_zpsthyoysbe.jpg

I'm assuming the square hole is for something?  They are along the inner sill too.....maybe for waxoil type thing application??  I'm assuming rover did some nice square bungs??  Answers on a postcard to.......

Yes & yes.

Ahhhhh......Quick search and minispares part number AYB10020 appears which looks about right. Not sure why it says 2 per car as I'll need 4 per side.

Cheers.

I presume the cage will be first, or do you want to get it rolling first?

I 'think' the cage will be first. That's the plan at this stage anyway.... Might trial fit subframes first (planning on converting the shell to run the earlier style twin bolt front subframe) and maybe welding in strengthening plates that might get linked to the cage....not for definite, but it's an idea.

Once cage is in, dry build of brake, fuel and battery lines and weld up any unnecessary holes in bulkheads....plus a few tweaks, then paint.....

....I think?

Funny you should mention double skinning floors.....when up at minisport on Tuesday I bumped into Clive King and had a chat with him about him doing rally gb last year and asked him about the stages and any damage sustained. He used fibreglass over floors under his mini and raved about them.

I like the idea to be fair as it allows you to remove them to inspect for damage and allow moisture to escape. Obviously not the same as double skinned steel, but a good idea.

I was chatting to Clive through Facebook a few months back and he mentioned the fibreglass over-floors then. Must say I had never heard of them.

I would be concerned about moisture getting between the double skinning. Bear in mind that the HRCR Mini cup is now all sealed surface, so would not be as damaging as say a typical forest.

So I would say as long as the cage is stiffening the shell up (which the sort you are talking about would) and you strengthen the subframes and their mounts etc, you should be ok.

Hi. Yes, but I'm intending on keeping it in case I do an event that doesn't allow composite panels....I'm keeping my options well and truly open.

Unless of course you have a question about it...fire away.

So they are almost like a floor guard then , I hadn't heard of them before

Exactly that. I wasn't aware that they existed either but Clive showed me a photo of his car in one of the magazine articles (he gets featured a lot!!!) and once he'd pointed it out his floor and sill definitely have a 'cover'.

He even went on to say he'd checked with the HRCR to see if they are OK to use and got the thumbs up.

If you wanted a set, he said one of his sponsors, BL Motorsport, make them......personally i'm tempted to make my own with a load of fibreglass, some resin and some sticky back plastic ;D

I think for tarmac stage rallying (which i'm hoping to do) a floor guard such as this isn't required, but for some of the daytime HRCR Clubmans rallies I definitely would consider fitting some guards such as this as I've heard some events can be rough.  Night road rallies (as we both know) can be very rough as well so might be a good idea for those worried about scratching paint and denting floors.

How are they fitted Dave? Self tappers or something less crude? I'm assuming they need holes drilled in the floor for whatever method of fixing is used?
