A bit of tidying up and a good spray with zinc rich primer and it's already looking a bit better..................
Then a wee bit of metal origami.........................
Fits too!!!!!!..................
All solid, painted up and ready for my MOT to prod with a screw driver, scratch the paint off, allow water to get in, and start rusting all over again........
****NOTE TO ALL CRITICS OF BODGERY AND STUFF - I will be replacing the sills fully (and properly) as and when time allows. The goal here was to get the car MOT'able, and rally fit.....please do not judge me
Neat job Dave! Certainly doesn't look like a bodge to me. Looks like a good strong repair, & as you say its a competition car not a show queen - if it does the job properly, why worry?
Understand that Dave, but what you've done there certainly doesn't count as a bodge in my book - I'd call covering up the total lack of metal at the base of the bulkhead/rear seat squab join with fibreglass & filler as a good bodge. That's what the the numpty that had had ours had done to it - back of the car wasn't really joined to the front!
He'd also fitted oversills - I daren't think what's under there on ours. Replacing them is on the 'to do' list, but I reckon the car will likely be sold before we get around to that....
Last night saw the final round of Knutsford and District Motor Clubs grass autotest championship......although it was actually a PCT (Production Car Trial) rather than an autotest.
Thanks to being allowed to do 'car stuff' over the weekend, 'Barry' the mini was fighting fit and took part, and even managed to clean one of the 'hills' ever time I went up!!!! Due to the time of year, we were struggling for light by the end of the trial, but was a superb way to spend an evening and numerous different cars took part.....2 minis, 1 micra's, a modern small pug of some sort etc etc......but the start of the show was a vintage Ford Model A Phaeton....a real Bonnie and Clyde style thing too!!!!
A very modified MX5 won (I wasn't aware that we were allowed to make such mods!!!!), second was the vintage Ford (had mega traction), and then me 3rd.....happy with the result really as I've got zero low down grunt/traction thanks to the cam and lightened flywheel I've got fitted......twin carbs don't seem to help either.
the car will likely be sold before we get around to that....
mmmm.....wonder if I need another clubman rally car????? Wonder which one of my balls the wife would cut off first if I did buy another!!!!!
You only need one Dave (ball, not Clubbie rally car...!!)
And when you have been married awhile you might not even need one
by the way. I think that was a very neat repair as well. Although do understand why you want to fit new proper sills. Oversills should never have been allowed!
Sailed through MOT with zero advisories!!!!! Clean sweep this time!
Also, had the provisional seeding through for the Vale of Clwyd Classic.......car 13 this year!!!! Unlucky for some....fingers crossed not for me!!!!! Never been seeded that high before (usually in the 40's+) but seeing as i've roped in a top nav, seems rude not to get nearer the front and have an early finish (and start ).

Excellent on both counts!
You wouldn't like a weeks holiday in Swansea getting ours through its MOT would you??!!

Good result on MOT. I am currently very nervous as mine goes in tomorrow, main concern will be emissions methinks? Good luck on the rally, we have every confidence in you
With a rally looming, usual pre rally prep is under way and a few niggles to sort.
Turned the mixture down a couple of flats to try and solve the plugs getting coked up and causing a misfire.....will keep a wire brush and plug spanner on hand during the day if that reappears!!!
Cleaned and re oiled the air filter.....figured a gunked up filter might be effecting the mixture too, so better to be safe than sorry.
Then turned to looking at swapping the 10" wheels on the car to the 12" minilites with knobblies. I've had issues with the wheel on the front N/S appearing to be buckled for some time now.....it has been driving me mad and several folks have commented on wheel wobble when they've followed me....but I've not had any vibration in the steering so figured at the time i'd ignore it. But on refitting the 12's this time I checked the wheel for true running again and this time enough was enough and I set about working out what was causing it.
Swapped the wheels for one I knew was straight - still the wobble was there (about 1/4" out of true so not a small amount)
Put the 10" Exactons back on - wobble cleared!!!!! Weird.
So, with a fresh cuppa in hand, a bit of head scratching later, the decision was made to remove the drive flange, and see what was up.
Then offered up to the back of a very good condition wheel (almost too good to use as a rally wheel!!!) to see what was going on......
The 'face' of the drive flange wouldn't sit flat against the rear of the wheel stud face......bit sketchy if you ask me!!!!!!
So in order to see what was going on a bit clearer, I sprayed the face of the drive flange with paint, then gave it a wiggle again in the wheel and then you can see where it is fowling.......
So clearly, this raised section was the only contact area on for the wheel to hub.....yikes!!!! No wonder the wheel wasn't sitting right.
