Great thread!! You've inspired me to look into rallying. I'm at the stage with my rebuild that if I'm going to do it now is the time to investigate my options. I've has a quick Google but I'd be really interested to know how you go about getting into rallying. How do you know what spec you car has to meet? who judges that it does? Do you need a licence? if so what type? How do you find about about events? etc etc
If you know of any website etc that you could suggest I have a look at that would be great.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Hope Dave doesn't mind me butting in, as I've nowt else to do at the moment!;
1. Car spec is as per the MSA Blue Book. Not always the easiest thing to interpret, but it's all in there. The online version is here;
http://msauk.org/sit...sp?article=1176
2. 'Who judges that it does' - Scrutineers. There is a list in the Blue Book here;
http://msauk.org/upl...ical_Officials_(Appendix_5f).pdf
It's always worth contacting your local scrute & getting to know him during your build, especially if there's something in the rules section of the BB that you don't understand (there probably will be!)
3. For 'closed to club' events you don't normally need a licence, just membership of that club. For championship type road rally events, to start you'll need a 'Non Race National B' licence. Again, details in the BB. It's usually just a matter of filling in a form & sending the MSA the money. Note though that it runs from January to the end of December, so unless your doing an event late on in the year, don't apply for one until January. Stage rallying is more complicated (you need to do a rally school licence test e.g.) so obviously much more expensive!)
4. I don't go rallying anymore, only sprinting & hillclimbing. We find out about events by checking the local regional motor club championships calenders (WAMC or ASWMC in our case) at the start of the season. We don't do any championships, just pick the individual events we want to do, then check the contact details for the club & apply when the regs (event regulations) are published. Most clubs now have websites that they publish the event details on - I assume rallying is still the same, Dave is better placed to tell you that!
HTH, & I'm sure Dave will give you more help specific to rallying.
Keith

Hi Chris.
Cheers for the kind words, and glad it's inspired you to have a go....it is the most fun you can have in a car with your clothes on!
Firstly what sort of rallying are you interested in doing? is it the sort I do (road rallying and historic road rallying) or is it more stage rallying?.....if it's stage events I hope you've got the budget!!!!
Might I suggest you have a look at this thread I started a while back in the 'motorsport' section......
http://www.theminifo...-into-rallying/
....if you can bung a similar question on the end of that to revive the thread i'll reply properly then.

Ha Ha.....Any questions just fire away Chris. I'm always happy to help and point people in the right direction. Can't stress how much fun doing motorsport in a mini is though....smile from ear to ear all day (or night) and you get heaps of admiring glances and attention too.

with a Mini in standard form you can get into basic forms of motorsport; autosolos or targa rallies don't require any special preparation... well, technically road rallies don't require it either but some roads can be a bit rough.
I do autosolos, targas and 12 car rallies and my car has very basic prep (roll cage, sump guard and bucket seats)...

and I agree, this thread is brilliant!

Sorry i've not updated this thread at all recently - you can blame my lime green road rally project for that!!!! Been competing in that and had a few decent results which would have been better had it not been for a clerical error from the other side of the car - take note: if you ever get into rallying and you're the driver, always blame the navigator if something goes wrong!!!!
Anyway, i'll be doing a few tweeks to the mini over the winter ready for the Tour of Cheshire in march and maybe even do a road rally in it in February too, but car choice is not decided for that event yet.
Below is a photo from the latest rally we've done......Keith, you'll like this one.
