the clutch (which admitadly is on its last legs) gaving us problems all night and at one point wouldn't let us engage any gears!!!

We've got a Mini exactly the same as that (except it won't let us engage any gears at any point!!)

I take it 4x4's are banned from PCT's? Otherwise may give one a go in the Grand Vitara tow truck...!!  :D

They weren't banned on one we did in wales a few years back......A Toyota Celica GT4 wooped us all!!!!  Last night an MX5 competed with a LSD too....which i thought was a no no.....but maybe at club level it's a bit more relaxed.  On national BTRDA events I think there are more rules regarding stuff like that.

4x4's have their own trial competitions.....they are something to see!!!  Back when I was a kid, my dad used to compete in PCT's in a metro and one day's event saw us competing whilst some 4x4 guys were having their 'off road' trials further up the field in a wooded bit.  They all get really miffed when my dad came chugging up the hill in an orange metro to see what they were up to inbetween our runs.  They didn't think a 'normal' car should be able to get where he did......suppose it's more about 'how' you drive than 'what' you drive.

What a great story - I'd have loved to see their faces....!! I'd really like to do some proper off roading competitions, but I don't think the Suzuki is good enough for them really - & we have enough trouble getting the Mini prepared...!!

Ha ha....Mitsubishi Pajero SWB...thats the daddy for cheap off roading.  I treated my wife to an offroad day up in the lake district for her 30th with a company called Kankku. They use Landrover Defenders normally, but it snowed really heavily the days leading up to it so they swapped to the Pajero's as they reckoned the Landies would be harder to drive and probably get stuck!!!

Got another good story come to think about it.

Way, way back in the day....My dad was on his way from a motorclub meet (or something like that at a local pub) in his tatty road rally mini, and on his way back almost ran into some 'lunatic' driving on the wrong side of the road towards him at full pelt in a fully tricked out Escort.

He turned around (knowing my dad it was a handbrake turn) and gave chase. He discovered the car in the motorclub pub carpark he'd just left, so went in to give the driver a piece of his mind (as you do!).

He found this tall, blonde, young lad and started laying into him saying we drive on the correct side in this country and bla bla bla.....learn how to drive you idiot etc etc.

After calming down, my dad went to leave and someone tapped him on the shoulder and asked him if he knew who that young lad was.....may dad replied "NO".

Turned out to be a very young Ari Vatanen in the area to recce for the RAC!!!!!!!  Oooops!

Ross Traders Rally 2014 went well, not as good as last year mind, but we still managed to win our class and finish 33rd OA.  I made a few navigation mistakes and missed a control thanks to mis-plotting Reg 4 so cost us a few places but it seemed alot of the top crews were making mistakes too.

It was the historic rally car fix I needed to give me the inspiration to crack on with my engine build and get the clubby back in the thick of the action.

Vale of Clwyd Classic is a little over a month away so best get on with it.

Bit of engine progress today....told you the block looks orangerer!!!

P8040149_zps659c3ff8.jpg

Crank fitted with new 'mains' and +0.03" thrust washers and end float checked.

P8040152_zps04ba8435.jpg

Pistons back in with new big ends.

.P8040155_zpsf63ad832.jpg

Now for the interesting bits!!!  If only selection boxes at christmas were this useful!!

P8040156_zpsae1e75d7.jpg

All the old bearings and thrust washers - not badly worn, but better to be safe than sorry.

P8040157_zpscac3d905.jpg

The timing disc I got sent unfortunately has a hole that's a bit off centre...at first I didn't think it would make much difference, but after checking it over a 90° sweep its actually 1.5° out, so over 360 it will be a full 6° out - bit of a pain, but better to know that now and solve the issue than wonder why the engine isn't running right.

P8040158_zps13f5cbc1.jpg

Cam timing.....not very interesting, but will wrestle a few more ponies from the old block.

P8040161_zps8506a31a.jpg

NEXT JOBS -

Measure the Idler gear end float and put together a final (yeh right!!) shopping list of the last bits and bobs to finish the engine - gaskets, etc etc.
