A photo from early on...before things hotted up!!!
First selective over Moel Arthur had a couple of cheeky NAM's testing the mini's ground clearance from the off.
Second selective was 50 miles long!!!! and after a missed slot early on we dropped 10 minutes putting it right and then kept the foot down until we came across a flickering orange glow. Blocking our way was a car doing an impression of a bonfire. As soon as i saw the shape I recognised the car as a SEAT Ibiza. We'd been chatting to the crew at petrol and at the start venue and I knew the nav from a previous event too so was relieved to see them both out of the car walking around on phones to the Fire service.
*******I can't stress enough that if anyone reading this is thinking of building a car for rallying, please carry a fire extinguisher and do everything possible to make the car safe and please build it properly!!!!! I'm not saying the crew of the Ibiza did anything wrong (they didn't), this was purely an accident involving a ruptured petrol tank or filler neck (they can't tell from the left over wreckage!!) but it could have been real nasty.....so build a car safe peeps!!!!*****************
Anyhoo....this blockage meant we had to cut a section out...missing 3 route checks and the iTC that had become a bonfire! This meant we picked up 4 fails so essentially ruined chances of any class win.....or so I thought!
The rest of the night went really well, with the mini hammering it along the tight and twisty welsh lanes - even catching a few cars up!!! Some of the whites were mega rough and we had to pick our route carefully to avoid mini swallowing holes!! The car did take a few heavy hits and I was concerned (after recent failures) that the tyres might give up after such impacts but the car (and tyres) held strong and we made our way to the finish at 07.30 (we started our first competative section at 00.35!!!). 7 hours and 160 miles later, it was time for an awesome breakfast!!!!!!!!!!
If it wasn't for the 4 fail's we would have finished 1st novice crew. We did put in a query but the CoC decided it was a case of 'Force Majeure' (whatever that BS means) and therefore the section could not be scrubbed...gutted!!! The toys went well and truely out of the pram.....but after a walk in the car park and a chat to the nav of the bonfire car (and a look at the wreckage - now on a recovery truck) I kinda thought it is just one of those things and maybe next time luck will favour us.
We still picked up an award though....First mixed crew and the Impulse group Trophy. We also should have won First historic, but only 1 award allowed.
35th overall and 6th in Novice class. Not bad for our first 'proper' welsh event....and a beast of an event too!!!
