Think it will take a lot of time to produce a full 3D model but it all really depends on the detail required and accurancy....just imagine measuring everything??

Yeah, it would takes yonks! But, if you could divide the work up between lots of people it would be easier. The problem then is making other peoples models fit into a master etc.

God you guys make things complicated!

Get me a front, rear, side and top elevation to scale that I can read in Catia, and I'll get you a model of the outside shape in a week!

If you want drawings of panels (and accurate ones), give me 4 months!

I use catia too (V4 and V5) for a living, and also Alias Studio works. As an (primarily) engineering package Catia would be best suited to the job of producing accurate cad models, but it's only as good as the data you have to work with in the first instance. Alias would be fantastic for a visual representation.

I've worked on a number of automotive projects where base cad models/drawings/anything didn't exist, and what we did in these instances was get the vehicle (or local area of the vehicle) 3D scanned. This produces cloud point data which is generally very accurate, but it aint cheap!

I'd be interested to see anyone model a mini up accurately on Catia in a week- drawing or no drawing!!!

If we're just talking BIW, and depending on the level of detail, I estimate it could take anywhere between 2 and 4 months full time.

It would be a good thing to venture into though- especially as there must be many commercial applications for the data once complete.

D.D.

Aah come on. I did a model of my 944 in 2 days with just 3 photos. It's not hard. As I say, IF I can get a 2d drawing in .model or .catpart format, I can do it. Hell, I have enough nouse on Catia to manage a body shape in a week. It's nt as if theres a lot of complex surfaces on a Mini.

Equally, the body parts themselves shouldn't be too hard. Once the flanges have been positioned, the actual metal bits are quite simple on a Mini. The time consuming bit is someone positioning the flanges so that everyone else can work off them.

common formats we would have to use if we were to "share the work" would have to be .3ds. I'm thinking about getteing solid works, a friend uses this at work and says its quite easy to grasp the basics. I used to use a program called Zmodeler and make cars for games sutch as 4x4evo and nfs, i have low poly detail minis but nothing acurate still. Maybe if i produde a detailed draught on paper fisrt then stick it in CAD?

I think this could be quite usefull to all of us mini builders to produce a set of drawings of a bare shell, how many people would be up for teaming up and working on this?
