Sorry for the daft question but after a couple of conversations with with one person on eBay and another on classic cars for sale I am confused! They have their cars advertised as cooper S's but when questioned their log book states cooper sports, these are two different models right? I thought that the cooper S was 90 bhp and the sport was 65 bhp. I am new to the mini scene so I've probably got this all wrong so can someone clarify for me? If I am right how can you tell a cooler sport from a Cooper S without a rolling road?

Cooper S Vs Cooper Sport

Some people do call their Cooper Sports-Cooper S's as an abbreviation, and you can argue with 'some' of them all you like but they will insist its called a Cooper S
Your right, Rover minis did do a Cooper S Works in the late 90's and John Cooper Garages did also provide an S Works conversion and an Si conversion. It all gets a bit confusing to be honest.
Pretty easy to tell if its a Works model

Thanks for that. So if it was converted or even done at the factory it would still probably only say sport on the log book?

Yep...Rover were terrible for detailing the logbooks and most models are just down as saloons. The conversions even if fitted from new wont be mentioned

Log books/V5's only show what the selling salesman / Main Dealer entered on the registration papers for the DVLA when new........most were of course not Mini enthusiasts and were not very interested in the finer detail of the model description, a Mini is a Mini to them.........only later enthusiast owners care about such details!

The last Cooper S that came out of Longbridge was in 1971. After the Cooper was revived in 1990 there was never a factory Cooper 'S'.
John Cooper, with Rover's agreement, created Cooper 'S's from standard factory models (after the log book was issued) with a series of conversion kits from 1991 on to suit various power outputs and base models. A Rover Mini Cooper can only be called an 'S' if it has a special chassis plate and a signed certificate from John Cooper. One of my Rover Mini Coopers is a proper 'S' and I also have the receipt from John Cooper.
It is a common problem with people calling their Cooper sportspack model an 'S'.
