Hello,

I have searched through similar topics and feel like ive tried most things suggested!

I have an austin mini 1985 , 998cc all standard!

untill recently it has been running fine. The car starts fine as it always does but when i accelerate the car misfires and either stalls or very nearly stalls.. I can overcome this by either holding my foot down or accelerating very gradually to keep the misfire to a minimum.... this happens until i am in at least 3rd gear and even then the car lacks power until the revs are high again. when stationary regardless of how long the car has been running if the accelerator is pressed and then let off completely the car very nearly stalls and idles very rough.. After reading other posts these are the things i have done.. none of which have made any difference
  • Distributor cap cleaned and all connectors checked .. all fine
  • plugs and leads all fine, plug gaps checked
  • points checked and fine
  • timming seems correct
  • vaccum hose checked and fine
  • dashpot oil level checked
  • condenser should be fine as new but havent tried a new one... ? worth it ?

I have also noticed the fuel pump ticks for a while after the engine stops.. longer than i have noticed before... maybe this is normal but surely a sign that the pump is working

any suggestions for my next step would be greatly recieved!!

check all 4 plugs are sparking; remove each ht lead in turn (with insulated pliers, or better still use those plug testers that flash) and make sure there is a difference.

None of the plugs should be wet.

not too complicated. I have a HIF44 carb which was straight forward. I just got some carb cleaner and took the base plate off to clean out all the float chamber and all the other inlets and outlets and also clean the bell housing innards. I didn't go as far to take any parts out of the float chamber tho, just a simple blast through with the cleaner.

Air leaking in on the vacuum side of the carb. either a dislodged breather pipe, leaking carb gasket or manifold gasket. If you have a brake servo, it could be leaking on the vac hose or internally!

try removing the vac pipe from the manifold that goes to the dizzy and blank off the spigot on the manifold or carb, also try removing the vac pipe from the servo ( if you have one ) and blank off the hole in the manifold. Do these tests separately or you wont know which one is the culprit if the issue goes away.

Most erratic tickiover and pulling problems can usually be attributed to Vac air leaks.

If you listen carefully, you may even hear a hissing noise that will lead you to a possible leak.

hi
have you looked at putting a different oil in the dashpot, maybe trying a new needle, carb spring or a new jet, it might be worth cleaning out the carb. ive recently cleaned my HS4 carb and its realy quite easy the only thing is if you take the float chamber apart you need to be careful with the float because it has a small tab that can quite easily be broken off, mine was filled up with old peices of dust dirt and rust lumps. another thing is you can take the distributor off the engine and give that a thorough clean through, ive just cleaned mine out and there was dust and dirt in the mechanism.
i own a 1984 mini 25 so your cars probably similar to mine. my car developing a few running problems now, so hopefully this advise might help. good luck :-)
