LOL! I've found myself saying that a few times this last year! I'm kinda on the fence with that, if my mini would've had seams when I bought her then she would've stayed like that. If its done right then fair enough but the seams are what makes a mini if you know what I mean.

Is deseaming a surefire fail in any MOT station or is it a case of who does the test and what kind of mood they're in on the day? Is it how the tester interprets the guidlines and decides if something is ok or not or is everything black and white as far as whats acceptable and whats not? Seems like it's a bit of a Lottery! My mini was deseamed when I bought it and it was quite roughly done. I've since cut out everything and replaced where the seams were with a strip of new metal and seam welded it in. The new front wings and a-panels are also seam welded so it's a good deal stronger than before, so if she could pass an MOT before then she should sail through once I'm finished her (!), right? I bloody hope so!

It's not an MOT fail at all.

The only reason it would fail is if the work caried out is unsafe, but that applies to anything.

Same old bungle refering to IVA & VOSA. Like a broken record :whistling: ;D

I wouldnt worry about it too much, its rare you would get pulled by VOSA but there is a slim chance so at least you know the facts now.

Tidy looking mini youve got there by the way. I'm not a massive fan of the whole de-seaming unless its wide, low and fully modified but each to our own.

Have you? at least one that pulls cars in for being deseamed or having a flip front?? they are there to look for overloaded commercial vehichles, dangerous loads and non roadworthy vehicles.

Honestly until you can provide FACT that a mini has been stopped, refused an MOT or failed any test because it is deseamed, has a flip front, or has a bulkhead modification then stop your scaremongering, I have no problem of a car failing for corrosion or bad workmanship, but you blab on and on about IVA & VOSA until you have actual proof, its all hearsay and no different to someone saying that all red cars will be pulled over??

if you want proof about these rules just look up on the governments DVLA web site it's all there in black and white

and yes i have been in a car (not driving) and been pulled into a VOSA check point where they went over the car to check it was road worthy and complied to the rules

i have also driven past 2 others going the other way

yes it's a slim chance in 40 years of me being alive i have only ever been stopped once and never driving

but it's a bit like saying robbing a bank is fine as long as you don't get caught

You make it cound like deseaming a mini is one of the worst crimes you could commit but in reality its just frowned upon by a potato wearing VOSA high vis jacket holding a clip board. Im not going to worry about it when I modify my chasis and I dont think anyone else needs to be pressured into feeling scared of this incredibly rare occurance.

And if I knew you could rob a bank and get away with it, I would be there in a heart beat. Thats where you have the most fun in life, doing things and getting away with it. We cant live by every rule enforced upon us otherwise we'll be brainless slabs of meat confined to twiddling our thumbs for entertainment.

If Minis (classics) were diesel powered - then it is quite likely you would get pulled over by VOSA if you drive on the right roads

VOSA usually does checks on HGV loading , Fuel - & work with other agency's for other 'crimes' ie C&E , police , border , etc

I doubt if a shiny de-seamed Mini will cause a stir - unless you look shifty , & bit's are hanging off

You are more likely to get problems at MOT time - if cracks appear in the seam area , or a fresh repair on a seam

can't see the average MOT inspector being that concerned - unless the seam isn't reinforced - or is braised

I'm chopping my Mini - so I'm expecting the MOT inspector to note that the body shell has had type change - ie saloon to convertible

and submit to DVLA changes to the vehicle description on the log book in the MOT

I suppose I should have no problems unless my mini will look like a complete heap when I try for an MOT seeing as I'm stuck on a little rock in the north sea! We don't have a VOSA test centre, our nearest is in Aberdeen (14hr overnight ferry journey) so even though some of our MOT test centres can be quite strict I can't see them being that awkward. The roadside tester do appear now and then but they only ever stop HGVs and test for overloading and fuel, so one advantage being isolated!

I wouldn't have thought you would have much problems on Shetland
