Hi, I have a single hs4 carb and I was wondering if I have a waxstat one ? Does anyone know the difference between them ? I want to buy a service kit for my carb because it isn't running at its best.

Any help would be great
Thanks !

The choke linkages are different, if you want to swap.

So am I right saying that I have a waxstat carb ? And I need to replace it with this ?

Does it actualy make an improvement ? Does it only make a difference only when the engine is really hot or as soon as the engine is running ? And final question is, is it easy to swap over ?
Thanks.

The part number is GMCCSK65 for the waxstat service kit.

http://minispares.co...its/CRK121.aspx <--full rebuild kit.

The conversion is seperate , but you can convert with 2 x 1p coins

Take the bottom off the waxstat unit (3 tabs) pull out the waxstat piece, replace with 2 x 1p coins....refit (its spring loaded so don't lose any parts when opening)

The part on the right you replace with 2 x 1p coins, the part on the left you keep

Do the conversion that Steve posted pictures of. It is quick and cheap. All you need is a vice, basic hand tools, and a few coins. You will not be sorry.

So what are the benefits of doing this compaired with leaving as is
Would timing or rpm have to be altered ??

Doing the 2 1p trick it isn't going to break in time is it ? Also does it actually make a difference ? By replacing it what is it doing ?

And if I wanted to change it back to how it was I just take the pennies out and put the old thing back in ?

Mines been converted a few years, it won't break. And yes to put back just replace the unit (don't lose it)

The waxstat is basically an emmissions / fuel saver ...when the temperature of the engine bay reaches a certain point thewaxstat weakens the mixture

Benefits of removing ...supposedly better for performance having a fixed jet...but to be honest can't say I noticed a difference.

I converted mine because I had a problem with the car cutting out at junctions but only when engine was warm....figured it was the mixture leaning off to much so converted...it solved my problem. for 2p it was worth a try

Three questions. I'll try and hit them all. (Steve posted before I could finish this post so fewer answers from me !!!)

The Wastat was designed with the intention of thermostatically making minor changes to the fuel/air mixture. There are more than a handful of anecdotal complaints that the thermostatic cartridge (the bronze disk in Steve's first picture) actually causes more mixture problems than justify its use for reduced emissions. That is why there is information on the web both about the 2-penny jet conversion and the fixed jet conversion parts (second picture above posted by crf150).

As Steve said, it won't break, for some people it does help with driveability, and no I would not plan on converting back. The capsule is held in place by crimps. Once you pry those open to install the coins I would consider that a final one-way conversion. Multiple prying and re-folding of the material will eventually result in fatigue failure. Convert once and be done.
