Hi all

I have an 89 mini Mayfair it has recently developed a problem with the gear change. It appears to slip, juddering / high pitched noise when changing up the box. If you back off it will engage and then drives normally or accelerate very gently it does not happen. Does anyone have any knowledge of this and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Ian

Is the oil changed regularly?

What type are you using?

I bought the car a couple of months ago but I believe it was changed in the last 9 months, not sure which type.
Is it true that the gearbox uses oil from the engine? are you referring to engine oil?

The engine and gearbox do share the same oil, therefore it needs to be changed regularly

I think (but it's probably worth checking with someone like guesworks) Halfords classic 20w50 is a good option, modern oils with additives may do more harm than good

Make sure you change oil & filter and use a top quality 20w50 oil.

I contacted guessworks, he reckons its the clutch bands, which may be slipping or even the torque converter...

If you drove it selecting gears manually does it still slip ?
Is it only slipping going up the gears or say if your driving along, Put your foot down does it slip ?
Also does the slipping occur of you drive it without warning the engine up ?
I run a 998 auto. I have to say the gearbox profers 10w40 oil (with regular changes)
20 w 50 seems to be a bit harsher on the clutch plates.

Good questions, I have not tried manual gear changes, will give it a go however it does slip while taking off in 1st. It does not slip at all under power, once in gear its all good. The worst seems to be 1st from a standstill, have to take off with v gentle accelerator power. It does sound like a dry noise like a belt slipping or metal against metal..
Thanks for the oil advice
Hope its not a full engine / box change I really like the auto and dont really want to change to a manual box..

Glad to see another auto lover :)

On mine I had a similar problem when selecting reverse you'd select it then wait literally 2 seconds & then it would engage or ingaging instantly with a rev. A quick adjustment of the gear selector cable solved this for me

I dont think its the same issue that I was referring to above, its slipping whilst in gear, however I have that problem too it does seem to take a while to engage both reverse and fwd. I will try adjusting the gear selector cable also, is this a complex operation?

Sorry not to hijack but helpful people with auto's are few and far between, but I have the exact same problem. What did you do!

Also just a suggestion do a couple of oil changes in a row to flush out the oilways and clean it and check the kickdown lever (dont know exactly what the correct position is but fiddling seems to do something)
