My 1980 Mini 1000 was fitted with the dreadful 5mph bumpers and I'm trying to fit a pair of stainless ones in their place. The front is deseamed so I'll have to make brackets, I'm just unsure about the rear lip.

Does anyone have pictures of the rear lip and maybe clearance measurements between the body and bumper, front and rear. Photos of what the rear looks like now:

The bumpre shave three captive bolts which attach it to the car by bolting downwards through the rear lip. If you obtain a bumper you can easily work out where you need to drill holes in the lip. From your picture, it looks like the 5mph bumper leaves a hole in the bodywork that won't be required for the chrome one.

The front bumper is identical and attaches in the same way. If the car has been de-seamed then presumably the lip has been removed. You can buy a replacement lip and spot weld it onto the front panel as it was originally. I guess you will have difficulty finding the correct panel in Canada so it might be easier to get one made up.

The excess holes will be covered with body plugs. I tried dry fitting the rear bumper but it was interfering with the boot hinges, I'm just wondering if the lip on my car is shorter than a "normal" one and if so how much clearance it'd need.

Does anyone have photos or measurements of the rear bumper and/or lip?

I can take some pictures of my bumpers if it will help, but if you Google it there are several examples.

when I put my bumper back on from when I panted my car i had put the boot on first, it didnt look like it was gunna go but a swift tap and it pushed past the hinges, so might be easier taking the boot and hinges off so you can mock up the bumper,

and gimmie a few mins I will go lie under my car get a picture of my rear valance so you see how big the lip is and how it bolts :)

Excellent, thanks a tonne Alex! Looks like 13mm on the ruler, so 11mm from the valance to the centre. I'll just make a bracket for the centre and align the out ones to fit.

Cheers!

more like 30mm from edge to edge, about 15mm from edge by valance to middle of hole.

and no worries, always happy to help :)
