Cheers for the advice,

The car failed its mot quite badly today, all the ball joints were shot, track rod ends in bad shape, one of the wheel bearings too, along with a load of other stuff. I am paying for that to be fixed and if its still knocking after I will give what you have suggested a shot.

Thanks,
Jake

Jake,

Did you ever get to the bottom of this knocking noise issue ?

I discovered at the weekend what was causing my similar issue. The front drivers side wheel bearing has gone. I know it should have been the first thing I checked but I only had a new one fitted 5 MONTHS ago so didn't even think to check this area

I'm hoping 5 months isn't an average life span for a bearing these days.

I sorted mine. It was the top engine steady at the engine end.

Didnt think it would be this as I replaced the rubber bushes about 9 months ago. Took it apart and bushes were shot - replaced them with polyuerethane ones which hopefully will last longer.

Also found the bottom engine steady bracket had detached from the front chasis rail which was obviously putting strain on the top mount.

A few years back I had a similar experience. A visual examination at first made it look like all the steadies were in place. Upon closer examination, the steadies (and some of the arm bushings replaced at the same time) had perished. These WERE urethane parts with only a few years of service. I suspect there is quite a bit of variation in the quality of the aftermarket parts and hopefully you got a good batch of bushings for your repairs. I will keep an eye on mine and replace them anytime I start to get sounds that imply the engine is shifting around.
