I got home from work tonight and flicked to channel 413 ( motors tv ) to find historic mini racing from Brands Hatch, What great racing ( helped by the fact my other half was riding her horse ) and nowhere to be seen.
I could quite easily have a go at this i thought to myself, then the commentator said " and here,s James Martin in car 72 ( i think ) making good pace. I then thought, how much does this type of racing cost as Mr Martin is probably a little bit better off than me!!!.
Barry "Whizzo" Williams was racing along with other familiar names in the classic mini world.
It was brilliant to see these mini,s driven sideways round the bends and josling for position.
I hope more of these races are going to be screened.

If you want to see these guys in action get yourself along to the Oulton Park Gold Cup on Bank Holiday Monday. The HSCC have got a three day meet on that weekend and the Pre-66 Touring cars ae racing on Monday. All the drivers are approachable and will share information on costs and set up and what is needed to race.

More info can be found here.

Mighty Minis are probably the cheapest tarmac racing option for Min's. Grassing would be even cheaper

Also the Mini Se7en S Class is aimed at drivers on a budget. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced driver returing to racing, the Mini Se7en S Class allows you to join the Mini Se7en grid. With modifications and improvements strictly limited the budget for a season in an S Class car is going to be affordable:

According to 'Whizzo' a competitive engine and gearbox costs around £20,000. That is without the car and race preparation plus running costs, entry fees, etc. Those full-race engines to 1960's Group n2 specification give around 130 bhp reliably and will rav safely to about 8000 rpm.

Or if you want to go out and use your road going car for some competition you could always join a club like DEWS and Hillclimb / Sprint it http://www.bjautobit...peed-series.htm

My brother used to race Miglias and the front runners were built to the same standards as the touring cars, cost around £30-40,000 of which about half was for the engine and gearbox.

Sounds like Barrie was spot on with his quoted price. Of course, he always drives for other people so it's not his money!
He normally drives one of Norman Grimshaw's Minis when he drives a Mini. By co-incidence, Norman bought a Cooper 'S' rally car from me many years ago. Another great Mini enthusiast.
