Old engine oil under an everyday car is a pretty poor way of protecting it.

I wouldnt bother using old engine oil. It smells and when mixed with waxoil makes the wax too thin. It then runs out making a horrible mess everywhere.

If you are going to use waxoil (or similar) use it the way it was meant too - heat it up rather than thin it down.

Dinitrol is also pretty good.

Dinitrol came out TOP in a recent Practical Classics report!

Did it? I thought the bilthamber one won. Was that the sierra they stripped and treated?

Mines all waxoiled with a mix of motor oil. then I covered my sill holes up with blue tack & filed them with oil left it for a couple of days & removed the blue tack & left it to drain.

To this day my sills are mint

If I remember rightly it was three or four or five issues ago, not part of a rebuild, just a straight test on smallish panels.

They did a long term test on a sierra where they stripped the paint and then put bands of each stuff on. They drove itnform6 months and compared the results. I thought bilthamber stuff was top in pretty much every section.

Oops I can't find the article now so I stand corrected.

Now am I right in remembering that waxoyl deteriorated or went hard or something after time and really needed reapplying at some stage, so although it's the name everyone thinks of it's not the best?

The underside of my car from the sump back as far as the front of the rear subby, is covered in a twenty year old build up of thick black oil leak sludge and road grime. If you scrape it away, you find bright shiny and perfectly preserved paintwork beneath and my floor pans and front subby are in mint condition under there. In fact they're in better condition than the areas I regularly waxoyl!

So In my experience used motor oil is actually pretty effective at preventing corrosion, maybe you have to mix it with the right amount of dirt and build it up gradually though!!

Not just on minis, mwhen you look at old capris the front crossmember is always immaculate however rusty the rest of the car is due to 'auto lubrication system'

Hayferina, half engine oil and half waxoyl works well, It's messy but is a great rust inhibitor, the only problem is the underside of your car always looks manky because it's sticky. Oil generally is great for stopping rust. Ever wondered why minis front subframes rarely need replaced? That's my theory anyway.

Look up Shell Ensis Fluid its used on Deep Sea Oil Platforms, and in my opinion far better than waxoyl. Its this enough in its virgin state to creep inall the hard to get places, and then never fully dries out just goes like soft candle wax and has anti rust agents in it.

Threw a piece of tin on the carage roof years ago and took it down several years later and it was like new!

Used it for years

Just looked through the bilthamber range. All looks good especially the etch primer stuff. Will have to give it a go.
