Mainly the austin mini 1969, and i understand that there are no air bags fitted in these. So my question as shown in the title is what was the first year they fitted them in mini's ? and is it possible for me to fit them ( or pay a garage )?

Probably 1996 with the introduction of MPI minis with impact bars in the doors.

People have managed for years without them. Not crashing helps too!

to be honest, if you crash a mini you're buggered. there not safe cars by any means. But when has that ever stopped any one from doing something dangerous. Drive safely, be aware of other drivers and hope for the best really.

The airbag is like putting a plaster on an amputation, in a head on the engine is your worst enemy, often ending up in your lap. No number of Airbags will save you there.

If you want a safe car buy a volvo
