Hello folks,

Ill soon be finished in the engine bay after repairing my OS X-member section.
Id like to blast a coat of paint over the engine bay but id also like to substantially sound proof the bulkhead with self adhesive deadening panels.

Would it be better to put them inside the cabin side or on the engine side?

Obviously the common type is the bitumen ones but they will be a pig to paint over..... what would you experienced forumites recommend?

Also, what is the best sound proofing for under the bonnet lid, with regards heat and overpainting etc.

Thanks in advance.

Only just noticed this thread

Bitumen + hot engine isn't a good plan, keep that stuff inside the car behind the dash. There's a pretty sizable section on how to and what to sound proof with, basicly depends on your budget to which brand you buy they're pretty much equal in terms of performance.

Inside the engine bay, I've personally got a bonnet sound proofing set and bulkhead piece from ebay:

Some claim they are problematic due to holding water, but I've had no issues with that. Mind you my engine bay doesn't leak :P

Given the space behind the dash area you should have no troble putting plenty of sound deadening in there. I've got about 1" of material in various types behind mine :D

Thanks for the reply Skortchio,

Good info there mate.

Where can i find the section on sound proofing?

I know the character of the mini is enhanced by its classic engine and gearbox noise, but id like to make it a little easier on the ear!

Just personal preference.

I know exactly what you mean, I was the same. Now mine is nice and quiet of rattles and resonance from the shell and road noise, just the howl of the K&N and the stereo :D

Basic learning for ya found here:

I went the budget route myself, with the stuff in this post. I can elaborate if you like :)
