Clutch is easy - Non verto clutches have the slave cylinder mounted horizontally on the top of the housing, verto clutches the cylinder is mounted at an angle on the side of the case.

I've heard so much contradictory information about A & A+ engines over the years I've given up. I used to think it was just down the the presence or not of a bypass hose. Now I'm not so sure...

Have your tried putting your engine number into Mr Guessworks fine engine decoder tool?

Hello there, for a 1988 mini it should be an A+ engine. The way I tell is to look at the front lower section of the engine block. If it has webbing in the casting, (a cross patten raised), then it's A+. A-series are smooth. It should be a verto clutch on A+. That has the slave cylinder on the side of the clutch cover at an angle, mounted on a plate. A-series has a horizontally mounted slave cylinder, mounted directly to the housing. Pictures below of the engine types.

non A+, second shot show non verto slave cylinder on housing in black.
