Hi guys,

I'm trying to fit a Mountney steering wheel boss kit to my 85' ritz. Its being insanely stiff going on to the steering rack, only gets a couple of millimetres on and then i can't get in on any further.

Is it normal to be very stiff or is there something i haven't done?

Cheers! =]

Do you mean the steering column? If so, are you sure that the splines are aligned correctly? If not, it is feasible that it would appear to slide on a few millimeters before locking out

ah yes i do, sorry. Yeah i think they're aligned. I've just been trying to line up the 2 indicator tabs but it just won't go on. Is there a different way is should be aligned?

Just went through this myself last week.

Give the spline a really good clean and then loads of WD40 on the spline and the boss. Line it up and wiggle it on. It's quite possible you'll need to tap it on with a rubber mallet but don't over do it. You should get it far enough on that you can see the whole thread for the nut.

To get the tabs to engage with the indicator cancel ring if may well be that the column itself is too high in the column tube. Mine was.

Previous owner had fitted a drop bracket so removing it (I need the leg room), you can see the column tube can be adjusted up or down the column itself be moving the tube up or down via the bracket that mounts to the lower dash rail. This in turn will move the indicator stalks up or down the column. Get this adjusted right and the tabs on the boss will fully engage.

Cheers

Ian
