my car is a 1971 mk3 morris mini and was registerd in july 1971 and i know that mk3 coopers were only produced for 15 months from march 1970 to july 1971 so could mine be a cooper s.

It also has all the right specs

but the person who had it before did not now much about the car and mini's. so has done what he wants to it , and ruined it.

Have you typed the engine code into the decoder on guessworks site. It might give you an idea of the engine spec. Also what does the log book say ?

What makes you think it might be?

The cooper s mk3 was very similar looking to the standard mk3. Considering that year was one of the highest production years it's fairly unlikely to be honest.

It's not at all uncommon to find S spec bits on modified Minis. If the V5 hasn't been altered and it came with a 1275 then it'd have to be an S.

Is it hydrolastic?

Doesn't always mean it's not an 'S'. Our Mk3 S simply has British Leyland Mini on its logbook. It all depended how the original selling dealer noted it down at first registration.

Mk3 Cooper S commission numbers were unique to the model, starting with N20D/101A running through to N20D/1668A.

Twin tanks?

Boot board brackets?

Extra stud on cylinder head? Casting number 12G 940? (Part number 12G 1805)

Tappet chest covers?

12H engine number with a 'F'? e.g. 12H/***F/**** 'F' = twin SU's fitted, (1-1/4")

130mph speedo?

7.5" discs? Brake servo?

Hydrolastic? (Although ours has been converted to dry)

These are only a few of the tell tale signs of an 'S' although, like Ethel said, so many parts could be retro fitted.

I knew of at least two written off Mk3 S that were rebuilt into Mk3 Mini 1000 donors back in the 1980's and I built a pretty good Mk3 S replica myself at the time using mostly secondhand parts......the DVLA even used to change the details on the log book back then if you knew how to ask!! As now scrapped Mk3 S log book 'upgrades' were much sought after even back then. Boot board brackets, oil cooler/angled grille strut and RH tank fixings are often not exactly to S factory spec if you know what to look for though....

Coopers and s variants are only a mini with a different engine in.It is very easy to replicate a 60s or 70s cooper, all parts are available as are logbooks.

I'd be checking the car is actually a 1971, let alone a cooper S...

I think your is a 1971 mk3 looking at the photos, but not a cooper s.

You state it's a 998, and it hasn't got right hand tank or boot board brackets. It's a nice mini though.

I don't think your engine is original tho, looks to be a later one. Also, does it have a 1275 head?
