Mine seems to be fine? Although i do drop 5mph off the limit when going past speed camera's :P
All the talk could be people putting different size wheels on and the speedo reading wrong as they have fitted bigger/smaller wheels.

they dont tend to be very accurate from things I have heard, but i wouldnt know, I am running a digital speedo which is set off a magnetic pickup and set to the rolling radius of my tyres, so its flipping accurate from what I have measured,

I got caught speeding in a 1983 mini in a 30mph zone (at 7:30am on Christmas Day, oops, naughty, bad, not a good start to Chrimbo and lesson learnt!). When the camera flashed I looked at the speedo and I was doing 40 and when the letter from the DVLA arrived it stated I was doing 39mph... so not bad!

However, it can depend on the age of your mini - I think my 1988 mini is probably a little out, and I suspect that when the speedo says I'm doing 30 it's probably more like 28mph. Some people suggest testing with a sat nav but I've heard mixed views of the accuracy of doing that ....

really need to do it over a measured mile, as satnavs have a mixed opinion on accuracy,

In my experience they are only mildly inaccurate at low speeds, but get much more inaccurate the faster you go. So by the time the needle hits around 80-90mph it's actually pure fiction. The good news is that they tend to over read, as opposed to under read though, meaning that you're very unlikely to break the speed limit without realising, but very likely to try and claim that your standard 998 can break the sound barrier, as we see in so many "how fast does your mini go" type threads here!! >_<

Mine was pretty accurate. I reckon it was within a mph. I used to drive past one of those signs that tells you your speed everyday and if I ever strayed over 40 mph it used to flash up that I was speeding. When the needle was on 40 mph the sign used to jump between 39 and 40 mph.

I got stopped by the police once. They asked me what speed I though I was doing. I said 60 and they said that they clocked me a 59. Their problem was that I had just gone down a road that advises 35 mph round some of the corners continuously at 60 mph. I was advised to slow down a bit.

Don't buy a mk3 astra if you want an accurate speedo. When you are pushing 80 according to the speedo you are in reality doing 68. Kind of useful though. The amount of times I thought I have gone past a camera a bit to fast and then remember that I am probably doing about 5 mph less.

In general I've found Mini speedos to be pretty accurate.

I think the problem arises when Minis have had their engine/gearbox changed, but without the speedo drive gears being swapped to compensate for the different final drive.

Correct - but replace every car, with most cars.

E.g, I believe police cars read bang on. We can also alter our mini speedos readings to be 100% correct

Most modern stuff reads 10% over i believe.

TRAFFIC police cars are about as accurate as you can get and have 1mph inciments marked on the speedo / use digital speedo's. and are calibrated every XXX months.

Panda cars (normal police) just drive normal cars, nothing special, they cant do you for speeding without a gun, and cant do anything other than warn you about speed.

My digital speedo reads 2mph off my sat nav at 119 mph / 117mph, which is not bad by any standards
The slower you go the closer they read.

Why not find one of these signs that tell you your speed as you pass and check the speedo, or use a sat nav.

mine reads way out because i have a 3.44 final drive rather than a 3.1 >_< also i have different sized wheels now so even if i fixed the speedo drive, it would still be out :mmkay:

i'll just use my sat nav or buy a decent speedometer on my iphone
